The Batman was one of the most buzzed-about superhero adaptations in recent years, and it's pretty safe to say that fans are excited to see the film's sequel. The Batman Part II is awaiting production and currently scheduled to debut in October 2025, and it sounds like one of the film's cast members has a particular arc in mind. In a recent interview with Discussing Film, Jeffrey Wright advocated for exploring the personal life of his character, James Gordon, in The Batman Part II, arguing that his character has a similar sort of dual role within the community as Batman.

"Well, it's probably not a good idea to get too far ahead of Matt [Reeves]," Wright argued. "One of the things that I've spoken about with him a little bit is, in playing the role, I wondered about his private life and I wonder about people who have the level of responsibility that he has, having that public face of rectitude and goodness. I wonder what lies underneath Commissioner Gordon because the Batman wears his cowl but, in some ways, Gordon wears a mask too. Gordon represents justice in a way through his type of righteousness, not sanctimony, and I wonder what might lie behind that mask with the sacrifices that he may have to consider because he gives so much to this public persona and his civic duty. What's the bearing of all that on him, underneath his mask? Those are questions that might be interesting to pursue, but we'll see. I'm looking forward to the opportunity to read and dive back into it, but I know as much as you know about it at the moment. We'll get there!"

What Is The Batman Sequel About?

Plot details regarding The Batman Part II are currently a mystery, although it is expected to feature the return of Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne / Batman, Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle / Catwoman, and more of the original film's cast.

"I mean, I can't give an update on that in terms of specifics, except to tell you that we are hard at work on the script," Reeves told ComicBook.com in an interview last year. "My partner and I are deep in it and I'm excited about what we're going to do."

Is The Batman Part II in the New DCU?

It has already been confirmed that The Batman Part II will be operating as a DC Elseworlds project, separate from James Gunn and Peter Safran's upcoming DC Universe of movies and Max-exclusive television shows.

"Matt is working on [The] Batman 2, which he thinks of it as a Batman crime saga, which also includes The Penguin TV series," Gunn previously said when asked about the project. "And it is its own thing, and he's hard at work on that. He came in and pitched us some amazing, really cool stuff the other day. Our plan is for that to continue."

Are you excited for The Batman Part II? What do you think of Jeffrey Wright's new comments? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below!

The Batman Part II is currently scheduled to debut in theaters on October 3, 2025.

Harvey Guillen Teases He May Not Have Died in Blue Beetle After All (Exclusive) https://comicbook.com/dc/news/harvey-guillen-teases-he-may-not-have-died-in-blue-beetle-after-all-exclusive/ Thu, 29 Feb 2024 02:16:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 1552405c-ee25-4025-9d6a-da5ef12d76f8

Harvey Guill?n, the actor best known for playing Guillermo de la Cruz in What We Do in the Shadows, had a very busy 2023. The actor appeared in multiple shows and movies, including different projects for DC. Guill?n played Dr. Sanchez in Blue Beetle and returned to voice Nightwing in Harley Quinn. Blue Beetle was released within about a week of Nightwing's death on Harley Quinn, and it ended up featuring Guill?n's character dying yet again... or did it? ComicBook.com recently had the chance to chat with Guill?n in honor of the digital release of Disney's Wish, and we brought up the fact that he died twice in DC last year. While Nightwing is expected to be revived on Harley Quinn, Guill?n also believes Dr. Sanchez could return...

"That's true. But I do want to point out that in Blue Beetle and Harley Quinn, you do see them, and here's the thing," Guill?n began. "In both scenarios ... I mean, a little bit more in the other one, but in Blue Beetle you never see my body ... You only see what you want to see when something splatters on a window, on a glass window on a door, but you never see the actual outcome of what you thought you saw. Right?"

"I mean, I'm saying anything's possible," he added when we asked if that meant we could be seeing Dr. Sanchez again.

We also asked if Guill?n has started work on the fifth season of Harley Quinn, to which he simply replied, "No."

When Will Blue Beetle Return to the DCU?

During an appearance on the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast last year, DC Studios head James Gunn referred to Jaime Reyes as the "first hero" in the new DC Universe, teasing that Xolo Maridue?a will reprise his role in future projects.

"I mean the first DCU character for sure is Blue Beetle and the first DCU movie is Superman," Gunn said at the time.

While chatting with ComicBook.com, director Angel Manuel Soto addressed the confirmation that Maridue?a will return as Blue Beetle.

"It was very reassuring to know that it's not just the character of Blue Beetle, it's Xolo being Blue Beetle," Soto explained. "Which means that what we have learned up to this point about his background and his family are part of Jaime Reyes' character. And that is a beautiful thing to see because it's a vote of confidence that what we did, the impact that it did and how it was shown, Whatever they end up doing in the bigger scheme of the DCU, you can always go back to Blue Beetle to know what are the foundations of Jaime Reyes."

Wish is available now at Digital retailers, and will be available on 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD on March 12th.

Dune: Part Two Star Reflects on Wanting to Play James Bond: "What Was I Thinking?" https://comicbook.com/movies/news/dune-part-two-star-austin-butler-play-james-bond-reaction/ Thu, 29 Feb 2024 02:15:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson 866f9b88-912b-4a49-9a14-6c5c99b58d01

From Elvis to Dune: Part Two, Austin Butler has already been featured in some pretty significant projects. As Butler has earned critical acclaim and a number of new fans, the actor is revisiting one career aspiration that he no longer has. During a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Butler revisited a video from Teen Vogue, in which he shared his hopes of playing the first American James Bond.

"That's crazy," Butler revealed. "What was I thinking? ...I grew up loving James Bond." When asked by Fallon if he'd still want to play Bond, Butler replied, "Nah, he's gotta be British."

Who Will Be the Next James Bond?

At the moment, an actor for the upcoming reboot of James Bond has yet to be cast. According to franchise producer Barbara Broccoli, the task of finding a successor to Daniel Craig's Bond is not easy.

"I go back to GoldenEye when everyone was saying 'the cold war is over, the wall is over, Bond is dead, no need for Bond, the whole world's at peace and now there's no villains' - and boy was that wrong!" Broccoli explained in an interview last year. "Daniel gave us the ability to mine the emotional life of the character ... and also the world was ready for it. I think these movies reflect the time they are in, and there's a big, big road ahead reinventing it for the next chapter and we haven't even begun with that."

Who Does Austin Butler Play in Dune: Part Two?

Butler is cast as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen in Dune: Part Two, the heir to Baron Harkonnen's empire who becomes a significant adversary for Paul Atredies (Timothee Chalamet).

"I'm always nervous. I always feel an incredible pressure," Butler explained in an interview with Interview Magazine last fall. "I felt that when I was 12 years old. Even if the material doesn't really require it, I feel I need to do the best that I possibly can. That sets a bar, and then I'm always afraid that I'm going to miss something. With Dune it was interesting, because I met with Denis [Villeneuve], and we got along very well, and started talking about the character. At that point, we didn't even have a script, but as we started talking about Feyd, my imagination started running, and I started to feel the terror of the challenge. That's what I'm guided by now: What really scares me?"

What Is Dune: Part Two About?

Dune: Part Two will explore the mythic journey of Paul Atreides as he unites with Chani and the Fremen while on a warpath of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, he endeavors to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee.

The big-screen epic Dune: Part Two includes Timoth?e Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Dave Bautista, Christopher Walken, Stephen McKinley Henderson, and L?a Seydoux, with Stellan Skarsg?rd, Charlotte Rampling, and Javier Bardem. Denis Villeneuve directed from a screenplay he co-wrote with Jon Spaihts based on Frank Herbert's iconic novel.

What do you think of Austin Butler's new stance on possibly playing James Bond? Who would you like to see play the iconic role next? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below!

Deadpool & Wolverine: Emma Corrin's X-Men Villain Reportedly Confirmed https://comicbook.com/movies/news/deadpool-wolverine-emma-corrins-x-men-villain-cassandra-nova-confirmed/ Thu, 29 Feb 2024 01:17:00 +0000 Timothy Adams baebc582-4923-4c45-92e6-303ee5d86935

Deadpool & Wolverine has seemingly revealed one of its surprising guest stars. The movie reunites Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as the titular Deadpool and Wolverine, respectively, marking the first X-Men movie developed by Marvel Studios. There have been numerous rumors that the film will feature some surprising guest stars, with reports of Taylor Swift playing Dazzler making the rounds. While nothing has been confirmed just yet regarding additional cameo appearances, a new U.S. copyright filing potentially confirms that star Emma Corrin is playing Charles Xavier's twin sister Cassandra Nova.

The U.S. Copyright Office's official filing has a February 13th preregistration date for Deadpool & Wolverine. Inside it has a description of the film and lists its cast, including the co-stars Ryan Reynolds / Deadpool and Hugh Jackman / Wolverine. Along with the returning Morena Baccarin as Deadpool's girlfriend Vanessa, the filing lists Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova. Corrin's role as the villainous Cassandra Nova was hinted at in the first trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine when eagle-eyed fans caught a glimpse of the back of a bald person's head that didn't appear to be Charles Xavier.

Who is Cassandra Nova?

Created by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely, Cassandra Nova debuted in 2001's New X-Men #114. Cassandra Nova possesses similar telekinetic and telepathic powers to her twin brother, Charles Xavier, and uses them in her crusade against what terms "the mutant menace." One of her worst acts involves sending an army of evolved mutant-hunting machines, the Sentinels, to the mutant island nation of Genosha that results in the death of 16 million Homo Superior.

It's later revealed that Professor X tried to kill his twin sister while they were both in the womb after detecting just how evil she really was. However, Professor X has no recollection of even having a sister. Jean Grey explains that the Xavier twin was born without a body -- using Charles' cells to survive and mimicking human traits. Cassandra is what's called a "Mummudrai": a formless being of living emotional energy.

An official, synopsis for Deadpool & Wolverine has not been released by Marvel Studios, but what's clear is that it will not only bring Deadpool into the Marvel Cinematic Universe but usher in a major new era of the X-Men under the banner of Marvel Studios. Shawn Levy directs Deadpool & Wolverine which stars Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Emma Corrin, Morena Baccarin, Rob Delaney, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, and Matthew Macfadyen.

"Not only have Kevin Feige and Marvel and Disney supported this extremely Deadpool-ian, audacious, R-rated tone, they've also supported our super meta, self-referential self-awareness," Levy told Wired about the first R-rated MCU movie. "Some of the jokes are dirty, some of them are cultural observations, but that's what we love about Deadpool, that he knows he's in a movie, even though the stakes are real. Our movie is very loyal to that DNA too, with tremendous Marvel and Disney support, in making fun of and being self-aware about everything, including themselves."

Marvel Studios' Deadpool & Wolverine opens only in theaters July 26.

AMC Confirms Three New Nicole Kidman Ads Will Debut This Week https://comicbook.com/movies/news/amc-confirms-three-new-nicole-kidman-ads-will-debut-this-week/ Thu, 29 Feb 2024 00:57:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak b0b85397-9e6e-47fa-b7d8-c7338bccaf99

It's finally happening... Nicole Kidman is getting new AMC ads. The Oscar-winner has become a favorite part of the moviegoing experience ever since her ad debuted at AMC Theatres back in 2021. In 2022, it was announced that Kidman had renewed her deal with AMC, and it was reported that she would be filming a new ad for the company. Now, we finally know when the new ad will run. During the theater chain's earnings call earlier today, AMC CEO Adam Aron revealed that THREE new ads starring Kidman are coming next month.

"We're going to show three different reels on a rotating basis starting on March 1st" Aron shared. "You'll see a different reel just before the movie begins."

While the idea of three new Kidman ads is exciting, it has been confirmed that they will replace the original ad. We'll never forget you, "Heartbreak feels good in a place like this."

Billy Ray, the screenwriter behind the original ad, told Vanity Fair in 2022 that he was asked by AMC to write a follow-up. Ray, who also wrote films such as Flightplan, The Hunger Games, Captain Phillips, and Richard Jewell, confirmed that a new ad had been written.

"I got a text from the chairman of AMC about a month ago asking me if I would write the next one, and of course, the answer to that is yes," Ray said. "It's already written." He added, "I'm very, very excited about it ... All I can tell you about it is we are not dumb enough to fly in the face of the one we've already done and try to top it. So, it's a very, very different approach that is a little bit of a wink to the one we've already done."

Ray also revealed that it was Kidman who asked him to write the first ad. "When Nicole first asked me to do it, I was just doing it as a favor," Ray explained. "I said I would do it for free just because I'm a fan and a friend of hers. My agent said, 'No, that's not what's happening here. You need to be paid for this.' And it turns out my agent was right because it's had real value."

You can expect to see the new AMC ad as early as this weekend ahead of Dune: Part Two.

Abigail Directors Promise Film Is More Bloody Than Ready or Not and Scream Sequels https://comicbook.com/horror/news/abigail-movie-horror-vampire-universal-monster-blood-draculas-daughter/ Wed, 28 Feb 2024 23:36:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh 52a787d1-966e-4620-9e31-48c9519fcb1e

Filmmakers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are set to deliver audiences the Universal Monster movie Abigail in April, with the pair making the promising tease that it will fully honor the mythology of vampires and feature more blood than any of their previous efforts. Given that blood is a key component in the overall mythology of vampires, it might not come as much surprise that we'll see a lot of it, but given their bloody track record, these remarks will surely excite fans looking to see what they pull off with a creature feature. Abigail is set to hit theaters on April 19th.

"All of our movies are bloody ... I would say that this is definitely the most bloody. We spent a lot of time apologizing to our actors on this movie!" Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett shared with Total Film, per GamesRadar. "I mean, blood is in the DNA of a vampire movie, and the amount of blood work in this one is... It's pretty extreme! ... But it's still fun."

With a career that includes V/H/S, Devil's Due, Southbound, Ready or Not, and two Scream movies, the pair have found a number of creative ways to spill blood for the sake of audiences' delight, but with the filmmakers often focusing on blending humor with horror, the storylines they explore don't always lend themselves to filming grotesque encounters. That all looks to change with Abigail, as evidenced by the first trailer.

The movie is described, "Children can be such monsters. After a group of would-be criminals kidnap the 12-year-old ballerina daughter of a powerful underworld figure, all they have to do to collect a $50 million ransom is watch the girl overnight. In an isolated mansion, the captors start to dwindle, one by one, and they discover, to their mounting horror, that they're locked inside with no normal little girl."

Abigail stars Melissa Barrera (Scream franchise, In the Heights), Dan Stevens (Gaslit, Legion), Kathryn Newton (Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Freaky), William Catlett (Black Lightning, True Story), Kevin Durand (Resident Evil: Retribution, X-Men Origins: Wolverine), and Angus Cloud (Euphoria, North Hollywood) as the kidnappers and Alisha Weir (Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical, Darklands) as Abigail.

Abigail is set to hit theaters on April 19th.

Star Wars Sequel and Mandalorian and Grogu Movies Working Titles Rumored to Be Revealed https://comicbook.com/movies/news/star-wars-sequel-mandalorian-grogu-movies-working-titles-rumor-revealed/ Wed, 28 Feb 2024 22:23:00 +0000 Aaron Perine cbe163f6-314f-4658-aca4-2cf01cfe36cf

Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu reportedly has a working title. Both the upcoming Star Wars movie and upcoming Rey film have been announced by Lucasfilm. The Cosmic Circus says that The Mandalorian and Grogu's working title is Thunder Alley. Meanwhile, Rey's story is being called "New Jedi Order" in the development stage. The outlet's other reporting indicated that the longer title for Daisy Ridley's return to the franchise was Star Wars X: A New Beginning. However, when Lucasfilm was approached for comment, they denied that title was being used. (Keep in mind that nothing will be confirmed until a massive Disney presentation of some sort.)

During a recent earnings call, Disney CEO Bob Iger hyped The Mandalorian's big movie for 2026 or so. "Looking to our 2025 theatrical slate, we're excited to bring audiences Captain America: Brave New World, Fantastic Four, Pixar's Elio, Zootopia 2, and Avatar 3," Disney CEO Bob Iger previously told investors. "And we're already looking forward to 2026 and beyond with Frozen 3, the first Toy Story movie since 2019 [Toy Story 5], and a new Star Wars movie that brings the Mandalorian and Grogu to the big screen for the very first time."

Excitement For Mando & Grogu

People were completely shocked when it came to this movie. The Mandalorian and Grogu was basically announced out of nowhere. But, with a focus on theatrical releases being touted by the executives at the top of the company, it was only a matter of time before the bounty hunter made his way to the big screen. Entertainment Tonight spoke to Star Wars story chief Dave Filoni about the big movie. He's obviously very jacked for people to hear more about the film.

"There's so much spinning in the galaxy right now. You know me better than to commit to any one thing, no mind trick works on me," Filoni smiled. "I'm excited about what we're doing right now, but the movie, I think, is gonna be great. With Jon at the helm, it's gonna be fantastic, and he's so well-studied in Star Wars now, so he's got a great shorthand and I love collaborating with him. Just excited to share the future of what we're doing."

What's Coming With The Mandalorian & Grogu?

In January, StarWars.com posted: "The Mandalorian and Grogu are embarking on a new adventure -- to movie theaters.Directed by Jon Favreau, and produced by Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy, and Dave Filoni, The Mandalorian & Grogu will go into production in 2024." They would go on to praise the work of Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau.

Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, said, "Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen."

"I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created," added Favreau. "The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting."

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson Shares Support of Rebecca Ferguson After Recalling Mistreatment on Set https://comicbook.com/movies/news/dwayne-the-rock-johnson-shares-support-of-rebecca-ferguson-after-recalling-mistreatment-on-set/ Wed, 28 Feb 2024 21:59:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak a6c04938-c74f-4353-af61-f6160e2eafab

This weekend, you can catch Denis Villeneuve's long-awaited Dune: Part Two in theaters. The reviews for the new film have been extremely positive, and the movie is currently up on Rotten Tomatoes with a 96% critics score. ComicBook.com's Patrick Cavanaugh gave the sequel a 4 out of 5, and called it a "thrilling journey." The movie's star-studded cast has been busy doing press, and Rebecca Ferguson (Lady Jessica) recently made headlines talking about an unnamed former co-star.

Ferguson called the actor an "idiot" and revealed they screamed at her and made her cry. While she confirmed the actor in question wasn't Tom Cruise or Hugh Jackman, many people online have been speculating about who it could be. Ferguson starred in Hercules (2014) with Dwyane Johnson AKA The Rock, and he took to social media to comment on her story.

"Hate seeing this but love seeing her stand up to bullshit. Rebecca was my guardian angel sent from heaven on our set. I love that woman. I'd like to find out who did this," Johnson shared. Considering people have been trying to guess who Ferguson was talking about, Johnson's comment could be a result of being suggested as the actor in question. You can view his tweet below:

"I did a film with an absolute idiot of a co-star and this human being was being so insecure and angry because this person couldn't get the scenes out," Ferguson said while appearing on the Reign With Josh Smith podcast. "And I think I was so vulnerable and uncomfortable that I got screamed at and I would cry walking off set."

"This person would literally look at me in front of the whole crew and say, 'You call yourself an actor? This is what I have to work with?' I stood there just breaking," Ferguson continued. "Because this person was number one on the call sheet, there was no safety net for me. No one had my back."

In addition to Timoth?e Chalamet and Zendaya, Dune: Part Two sees the return of Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck, Javier Bardem as Stilgar, Stellan Skarsg?rd as Baron Harkonnen, and Dave Bautista as Glossu Rabban. New cast members include Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, L?a Seydoux as Lady Margot, and Christopher Walker as Emperor Shaddam IV.

"We have been hearing in the past few decades that it's not possible to adapt this book, and that it's an impossible task. I think that in the back of the mind of the studio, it's still the same!" Villeneuve told Total Film in a 2021 interview. "So the first thing was to prove that there was a beautiful, popular movie that can exist, and I think that I proved that - everybody at Warner Bros and Legendary, they are 100 percent behind the project. They feel that it would need a really bad outcome at the box office to not have a Dune: Part Two, because they love the movie. They are proud of the movie, so they want the movie to move forward. And they still did half of it. So, you know, I'm very optimistic."

Dune: Part Two is scheduled to be released on March 1st.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Cast and Crew Already Have More Sequel Plans in Mind https://comicbook.com/movies/news/ghostbusters-frozen-empire-sequel-ideas-cast-crew-franchise-future/ Wed, 28 Feb 2024 21:35:00 +0000 Charlie Ridgely afa98c30-9748-4270-8fa7-bb1d95170c43

The Ghostbusters franchise got a surge in recent years, as Jason Reitman -- son of original director Ivan Reitman -- brought the series back with an eye toward the new generation. The story continues the original films, but with a slew of new characters and a more adventurous, Amblin-esque spin. Ghostbusters: Afterlife is being followed by this year's Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, and it appears there are plenty of ideas floating around for even more films in the future.

Speaking to Total Film, Frozen Empire director Gil Kenan said that he wants to keep the Ghostbusters franchise going beyond this next movie. It all just depends on how many fans keep showing up.

"Jason and I really love Ghostbusters," Kenan said. "We love these characters and we would be really happy if audiences were down to keep going on adventures with them. If audiences feel this way, then we know what the next stories are going to be."

While Kenan and Reitman may have ideas for more Ghostbusters movies, the cast seems to be down to continue showing up for them. Carrie Coon expressed nothing but excitement when presented with the idea of continuing to make new films in the franchise.

"Absolutely! There's something so thrilling about working on these movies, especially as a woman," Coon explained. "We're not often asked to participate in the adventure or the physical elements of movies like this. We're often just on the sidelines, so to be thrown into the action has been a real thrill. On top of that... Well, it's already going to be in my obituary, so I might as well lean in."

The same can be said for McKenna Grace, who plays the daughter of Coon's character in both of the new Ghostbusters movies. Despite the proton packs creating more difficult work days, she wants to keep suiting up as long as she can.

"As heavy as those frickin' proton packs are, I would gladly put one on again," Grace said. "The proton packs weight around 40 pounds, but I'm fine with that because it's been a dream come true to be part of this franchise. I love these films. I love getting to be a Ghostbuster. I mean, who are you gonna call? This guy! Me."

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire will hit theaters on March 22nd.

Black Widow Star Calls Reshoots "Soul-Destroying," Wanted Their Role to Be Recast https://comicbook.com/movies/news/black-widow-mcu-reshoots-soul-destroying-recast-role-ray-winstone/ Wed, 28 Feb 2024 21:01:00 +0000 Aaron Perine dbd3cc56-2c07-42e7-aa26-a205297c74e0

One Black Widow star says that working on the Marvel Studios movie was "soul destroying." Ray Winstone singled out his time on the MCU feature in a new interview with Radio Times. In particular, the Dreykov actor pointed toward executive notes and the reshooting process as the biggest negatives. Winstone alluded to being really happy with his performance in Black Widow. But, when the reshoot process began, he felt like there was executive meddling going on. The star even mentioned that he wanted them to recast his character at one point. Now, that didn't happen because he had signed a contract. But, it's clear that Winstone was not a happy camper at that point.

"It was fine until you have to do the reshoots," the star explained. "Then you find out that a few producers have come down, and your performance is too much, it's too strong... That's the way Marvel works. It can be soul-destroying because you feel like you're doing great work."

"I actually said, 'You ought to recast it because that was it for me,'" Winstone revealed. "And you end up doing it again because you're contracted to do it. Otherwise you end up in court. It's like being kicked in the balls."

Black Widow's Reception

(Photo: MARVEL)

Funnily enough, Black Widow is one of the Marvel's best received post-Endgame movies. On Rotten Tomatoes, it is certified fresh with a 79% from critics and a very cheery 91% from audiences. However, writer Eric Pearson told ComicBook.com's Phase Zero podcast that he had received hate mail for things like the Taskmaster twist in the film.

"I got one. I made the mistake of looking in direct message requests and someone said, 'I don't mean to be out of line, but Taskmaster was the biggest betrayal of my life.' I got mad for a second and then I was like, 'Well, you've had a pretty good life then,'" he told us. If that's the worst thing that's ever happened to you, then you should be psyched because someone in a movie wasn't who you wanted them to be."

"Taskmaster was going to be involved and there was versions before I came that was Tony Masters," Pearson added. "I kept thinking, I was like, 'Can this guy somehow not just be a goon?' Because Dreykov in the Red Room is the thing that's tied into Natasha personally in her past of giant, nefarious, that as we learned, the spy station, that is circling the globe in the atmosphere. Why is there this guy? Why would this guy be an arm of them? That's what I kept trying to be... Trust me, I looked very, very far for how do we get this Tony Masters guy to believably be an agent of the Red Room? And then just leaned more towards other things were making sense, other parts of the puzzle were adding up."

Jonah Hex: Josh Brolin Says He Will "Never Stop Sh-tting" on DC Movie https://comicbook.com/movies/news/jonah-hex-josh-brolin-says-he-will-never-stop-sh-tting-on-dc-movie/ Wed, 28 Feb 2024 20:56:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 4cb8467a-8542-4ec5-b9e4-6b6cef0e23d6 In a new interview, actor Josh Brolin was blunt about Jonah Hex, the "s--tty f---ing movie" that he starred in alongside Megan Fox and John Malkovich. The star, who has since gone on to appear in a number of actually-successful comic book movies including Deadpool 2 and Avengers: Endgame, promised that he won't ever relent in his criticism of Jonah Hex -- although he has decided to tone down his criticism of some of the other individuals involved with the production. Brolin, who has also taken aim at some of his other less-successful projects, including Amazon's Outer Range.

The difference between Outer Range, which he said confused him, and Jonah Hex, which he genuinely seems to hate, is night and day. And in a moment he had to know would be the headline in nerd circles, Brolin said he would "never stop s--tting" on Hex.

"I won't ever stop shitting on Jonah Hex," Brolin told GQ, "because it was a s---ty f---ing movie!"

Still, he said, he has stopped attacking director Jimmy Hayward personally. In the past, Brolin has criticized the filmmaker for being in over his head and not up to the task. In the time since his last public comments on Hayward, the two have reconnected -- only for Brolin to learn that Hayward has been dealing with an incredibly painful battle with bone cancer.

"It reminded me [that] you can't just keep s---ting on somebody," Brolin told the magazine. "I don't know what the f--k's going on in his life. I mean, total facial reconstruction, the whole thing."

To be fair, Hayward also apologized for his role in the film's failure -- and in some more recent remarks, Brolin admitted that it was both himself and Warner Bros. who brought Hayward on board because they needed a director right away.

"It was not successful creatively or monetarily," Brolin said last year. "I mean, everybody knows how I feel about Jonah Hex. But the biggest thing with Jonah Hex is rushing into hiring somebody. I remember Jeff Robinov, who I'm still close with, who was running Warner Brothers at the time and he was like, 'Look, you've got to get a director in the next two weeks, otherwise we've got to can this thing. And then you meet somebody who has a lot of knowledge, [director] Jimmy Hayward, and I remember it didn't feel right. I loved that he was excited, but he just didn't have the experience and he didn't treat it like I would imagine somebody would want to treat it -- to run back to their house at the end of their every day and watch tonal inspirations and [Martin] Scorsese movies or this or that. He would be out partying instead."

He added, "And not that I had a ton of pull then, but I brought in Megan [Fox,] who I thought was perfect for that role. Maybe not the best actress at that moment, but for that type of parody, forget it. Her, at that moment? You couldn't do better than that. And [Michael] Fassbender? One of our best actors, who had done Shame and Hunger, are you kidding me? Malkovich, who had just been ripped off by Bernie Madoff, and we're asking him to do it for a third of his price. He said yes. I mean, f-ck, I still owe these people. Michael Shannon was in it, he was cut out. We just asked Michael to do George and Tammy because I pulled out of it, and he took my place and was amazing in it. So the intention was there, I just think we made a big mistake with the director -- not to blame it all at him, because that was my choice, that was my bad choice."

Netflix Targets Dan Lin as New Film Chief https://comicbook.com/movies/news/netflix-targets-dan-lin-as-new-film-chief/ Wed, 28 Feb 2024 19:58:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 99d932cd-2003-44ac-89c4-3018484d588d

Longtime Warner Bros. executive Dan Lin has been tapped to replace Scott Stuber as head of film for Netflix, according to a new report. Lin, a producer on the Sherlock Holmes, It, and Lego Movie franchise, will step into his new role on April 1, departing Rideback, the production company he co-founded. Lin, who served as a producer on The Last Airbender live-action reboot, had actually been one of the candidates to run Warner's DC Studios, but ultimately excused himself from consideration after deciding that he didn't want to leave Rideback at the time. Of course, Netflix is a lot less troubled than Warner Bros. Discovery, making the position, at least in theory, a lot more stable.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rideback's Jonathan Eirich and Michael LoFaso will take over as co-CEOs after Lin leaves. The two will presumably also run Rideback Rise, the company's associated nonprofit.

Prior to The Last Airbender, Lin had worked with Netflix on Death Note and The Two Popes. He has long been a champion of genre film, citing his work on George Miller's aborted Justice League Mortal with changing the direction of his career.

"It's the reason I started my company," Lin said in 2022. "I thought that was the ultimate project. I was a fanboy - for me to work with all those characters together on a team... that's my dream."

When the DC deal was on the table, Lin reportedly wanted to keep Rideback going with WBD taking on an equity stake, but the terms got "bogged down." It doesn't sound like Netflix will be buying into Rideback either, but a year and change is a lot of time to figure out a succession plan.

According to chief content officer Ted Sarandos, not much will change right away in terms of how Netflix handles their original content in the wake of Stuber's departure. Speaking during a recent investor call, Netflix executives said that the plan is to continue focusing on quality and creating a steady stream of content. The company's "mix" -- originals, recent licensed movies, and older movies known as catalog titles -- has been Netflix's magic bullet since they first started making original shows and movies. At one point, Netflix had one of the deepest catalogs of any video store in the country -- although now that most remaining stores are the very best, and Netflix has abandoned disc rentals, that's no longer true.

Star Wars: Hayden Christensen Admits He Finally Apologized to the Youngling He Terrified in the Prequel Trilogy https://comicbook.com/starwars/news/star-wars-revenge-of-the-sith-hayden-christensen-youngling-killed-reaction/ Wed, 28 Feb 2024 19:15:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh 3f17150d-faf6-44e5-845f-ee0771740d09

One of the most distressing sequences in the Star Wars prequels was the scene in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith in which Anakin Skywalker is tasked with slaughtering all the Jedi, including the Younglings who turned to him for salvation as they witnessed their elders being eradicated. Actor Hayden Christensen recently looked back on that moment and noted how he tried to frighten one young actor, Ross Beadman, to evoke a genuine reaction from him, which makes for a tragic and iconic sequence in the movie. Luckily, Christensen would ultimately reunite with Beadman and jokingly admitted that he made amends for intimidating the young boy.

While speaking with Empire Magazine about the intensity of the sequence, Christensen expressed, "Kids seem to forget about that scene when they meet me! There's not any fear or intimidation. They're just excited to meet Anakin. There was a lot of talk about us doing that scene, and I love that George [Lucas] did it. It was a bold move. And it's shocking."

He continued, "When we were filming that, we were having a hard time getting the reaction that we wanted from the kid. And so I shouted, or growled at him, because we needed a genuine moment of him being startled. It got the response that we needed, and it makes that scene work really well ... I saw him years later. I said, 'Sorry about how that went.'"

Christensen starred as Anakin in both Star Wars: Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, and while initial reactions to the prequel films were divisive between older and younger audiences, the more time passed, the more the reception to the prequel trilogy shifted towards the positive. Additionally, the more time that passed, the more Christensen began to appear at public events in support of the franchise, including appearances at Star Wars Celebration.

Fans grew even more excited with the announcement of Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi, which brought back Christensen's costar Ewan McGregor to reprise his role as the Jedi Master, with Lucasfilm then revealing that Christensen would also be returning to the franchise. That six-episode series allowed the actor to not only embody Darth Vader, but also reprise his role as a younger Anakin.

Last year's Star Wars: Ahsoka continued the excitement among Christensen fans, as the actor got to explore the dynamic he had with his padawan as seen in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

While Star Wars: Ahsoka is confirmed to be getting a Season 2, it has yet to be revealed if Christensen will appear in the new episodes.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes Reveals New Image https://comicbook.com/movies/news/kingdom-of-the-planet-of-the-apes-reveals-new-image/ Wed, 28 Feb 2024 19:05:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak beb65c08-0f97-490f-9218-c63628a763a1

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is heading to theaters in May, and it's been confirmed to take place "many generations" after the previous trilogy. The new film stars Owen Teague as Noa, a young ape conflicted about his place in the everchanging world. Fans got a glimpse of Noa during the recent trailer that dropped during the Super Bowl. Today, Total Film took to social media to share an image from Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and tease their upcoming issue.

"? EXCLUSIVE ? Here's your new look at Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, taken from the latest issue of Total Film magazine, which is out on Friday. Pre-order here >> https://trib.al/BtU0llb," Total Film tweeted. You can check out the photo in the post below:

Do You Need to Watch the Other Planet of the Apes Movies Before Kingdom?

Recently, ComicBook.com paid a visit to the film's edit bay, and director Wes Ball spoke to members of the press about the latest installment to the franchise that began back in 1968. The original franchise included five films before Tim Burton made his own version in 2001. Then, the Andy Serkis-led trilogy began in 2011 and came to an end in 2017. With Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes being the tenth movie of the franchise, we asked Ball if moviegoers need to see all of the other films in order to understand the next one. While having seen the previous films won't be a requirement, it will likely enhance the experience.

"I think so," Ball said when asked if you can watch Kingdom without having seen the previous films. "They would be greatly rewarded by having knowledge of the previous movies, but it is certainly its own standalone story ... I am really hoping that an audience who goes to see this movie at least is aware that it is connected to other movies, even if they haven't seen them," Ball added, revealing an opening scene will "get people up to speed."

"But we try really hard to find that middle ground where we don't want to sit there and explain everything over again," he added. "We kind of let the audience lean in and do their own math ... But for the most part, I think it's very much one standalone thing."

"There also are lots of Easter eggs for people that are fans from the '68 version," Ball added. "There's a ton. All the way down to the sounds that we literally took from the movie and put it in that I think die-hard fans will appreciate and remember."

Based on Ball's comments, we'd recommend at least watching Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011), Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014), and War for the Planet of the Apes (2017) before checking out Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. It also sounds like watching Planet of the Apes (1968) will enhance the experience if you're looking out for easter eggs.

Directed by Wes Ball, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes stars Owen Teague (IT), Freya Allan (The Witcher), Kevin Durand (Locke & Key), Peter Macon (Shameless), and William H. Macy (Fargo). The movie opens in theaters on May 10th.

Liam Neeson's The Naked Gun Reboot Gets 2025 Release Date From Paramount https://comicbook.com/movies/news/liam-neesons-the-naked-gun-reboot-gets-2025-release-date-from-paramount/ Wed, 28 Feb 2024 19:01:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 64b44515-9a7f-4c06-9d43-6dde778e730d

The next installment in The Naked Gun franchise will be in theaters next year, Paramount Global announced today. The company announced a number of 2025 and 2026 release dates today, putting together an ambitious franchise calendar that includes new installments of last year's biggest Paramount hits, PAW Patrol and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Naked Gun, still technically untitled, has been in development Hell for a while, but has now emerged with a July 15, 2025 release date on the books. Taken and Star Wars franchise veteran Liam Neeson is set to star, although it isn't clear whether he will play Frank Drebin (Leslie Nielsen's character from Police Squad and The Naked Gun) or a new-but-similar character.

The world of The Naked Gun debuted in Police Squad!, a short-lived TV series from the filmmakers who created Airplane!, in 1982. While the show failed to set the world on fire, a 1988 feature film titled Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!, became a massive hit at the box office, earning more than $150 million against a reported budget of just $12 million. Two more installments -- Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear and Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult -- followed in 1991 and 1994.

According to Variety, who first reported the date, The Naked Gun project will be directed and executive produced by Avika Schaffer, who co-wrote the draft script alongside Dan Gregor and Doug Man. Family Guy's Seth MacFarlane and Erica Huggins are producing via their company Fuzzy Door.

It might seem strange for someone with the action bona fides of Liam Neeson to be pursuing a Naked Gun franchise, but it tracks with Leslie Nielsen's career trajectory. Nielsen starred in a series of straightforward dramas, sometimes playing villains, for much of his career. It wasn't until he appeared in Airplane! in 1980 that Nielsen -- an actor onscreen for 25 years at that point -- became known for his comedy chops. That gig led to Police Squad! and the rest was history, with a whole generation of viewers growing up knowing Nielsen primarily as Frank Drebin.

The original Naked Gun films also starred Priscilla Presley, O.J. Simpson, "Weird Al" Yankovic (in cameos as himself), and the late George Kennedy. Ed Williams, also known for roles in Father of the Bride and Carnosaur, was the only person besides Nielsen to appear in all three movies and Police Squad!. The last time the franchise attempted anythign was in 2012, when a point-and-click PC game called Naked Gun: ICUP was released. Parodying the naming conventions of shows like NCIS and CSI, the game earned just a 60 on Metacritic, and was the first (and so far only) piece of Naked Gun media not to star Nielsen, who passed away in 2011. A.J. LoCascio starred in the game as Frank's son, who had been seen briefly in Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult.

New Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Movie Dated for 2026 at Paramount https://comicbook.com/movies/news/teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-mutant-mayhem-sequel-release-date-2026/ Wed, 28 Feb 2024 18:40:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo 395241a8-7a1f-40d0-860a-ec3342219c6d

Cowabunga! Paramount Pictures has announced that the heroes in a half shell will return to the big screen when its untitled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem sequel oozes into theaters on October 9, 2026. Jeff Rowe, who directed the CG-animated movie for Paramount's Nickelodeon Movies and producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's Point Grey Pictures, is helming the previously announced follow-up to last summer's reboot that grossed $180 million at the global box office. (A spinoff TV series set in the universe of Mutant Mayhem, titled Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, is set to stream on Paramount+ this summer.)

"Reinvigorating this franchise has been years in the making, and we are thrilled to continue expanding the beloved Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles universe and bring new adventures to families and fans," Ramsey Naito, president of Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation, said when announcing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2.

Added Brian Robbins, CEO of Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon: "In the nearly 40 years since Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles launched into the zeitgeist, it has entertained generations of fans and only continues to grow. We are excited to grow TMNT's legacy in partnership with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg at Point Grey, and Jeff Rowe, who are innovating the franchise with their singular brand of humor and elevated storytelling for audiences everywhere, across virtually every platform."

teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-mutant-mayhem-movie.jpg

TMNT: Mutant Mayhem featured the voices of Nicolas Cantu (The Walking Dead: World Beyond) as leader Leonardo, Brady Noon (The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers) as the raging Ralphael, Micah Abbey (Cousins for Life) as the nerdy Donatello, and Shamon Brown Jr. (The Chi) as the wise-cracking Michelangelo. Jackie Chan (Rush Hour) voiced the turtles' adoptive father and rat sensei, Splinter, and Ayo Edebiri (The Bear) played their human ally, aspiring journalist April O'Neil. After defeating the mutant menace Superfly (Ice Cube), the movie ended with Cynthia Utrom (Maya Rudolph) hiring the Turtle brothers' next villain: their arch-nemesis, Shredder.

"Shredder used to be the main villain [in Mutant Mayhem] before we pivoted away from that," Rowe revealed last year in an interview. "They saved the Joker for The Dark Knight."

The director continued: "The one thing I can say without spoiling anything is, [Shredder] needs to be 100 times scarier than Superfly - who is a credible villain, he's dangerous, he's strong, he seems like he could mess the Turtles up," Rowe added. "Shredder needs to be that, just significantly more."

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is now available to stream on Paramount+. The sequel opens in theaters Oct. 9, 2026.

Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead is officially getting a remake, and now we know the cast and crew that will be part of it - as well as getting a look at the first trailer!

The teaser trailer takes the classic premise of the 1991 film and brings it into today: an elderly lady rolls up to a house of noisy kids, clutching her bible in hand. The eldest daughter of the African-American family (in the Christina Applegate role) answers the door, already looking "Hell no" skeptical.

WATCH: Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead (2024) Teaser Trailer

The new Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead will star Nicole Richie and June Squibb as leads of an ensemble that will include Jermaine Fowler (Sorry to Bother You, Coming 2 America), comedian Ms. Pat, Olympian Gus Kenworthy, and newcomers Simone Joy Jones, Donielle Tremaine Hansley, Miles Fowler, Iantha Richardson and Tyriq Withers.

Wade Allain-Marcus is directing - he's previously worked as an actor, with roles in FX's Snowfall, HBO's Insecure, and ABC's Grown-ish. The script is by Ted Lasso writer Chuch Hayward; producers include Juliet Berman, Oren Segal, Justin Nappi, and Juliana Maio. Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead is being produced through BET+ (which will host it for streaming release), while Iconic Events Releasing will handle the film's theatrical release. Tyra Banks is attached as an executive producer through her SMiZE Productions imprint, with Ryan Huffman, Eric Tosstorff, and Kim Coleman also attached as executive producers. Michael Phillips and Tova Laiter will serve as senior executive producers.

Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead (2024) will be released in theaters on April 12th.

What Is Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead Remake About?

As per Variety's report:

Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead follows 17-year-old girl Tanya (Jones), who plans to vacation in Europe with her friends before heading to college in the fall. But her mom (Ms. Pat) decides to go to a wellness retreat in Thailand, so Tanya is forced to stay home with her siblings. When -- as the title suggests -- their elderly babysitter (Squibb) unexpectedly dies, Tayna gets a job working for an ambitious woman named Rose (Ritchie). As she juggles work, family and a complicated romance, Tanya navigates adulthood at the cost of her last summer of freedom.

This remake has been in development since 2020, when it was over at Treehouse Pictures.

"Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead is an iconic cult classic," Treehouse president Justin Nappi said in a statement at the time. "We look forward to bringing audiences a new interpretation that is as funny and outrageous as the original but also smart and connected to the world today."

Michael Phillips has been with this remake since that time, and was an executive producer on the 1991 original version of the film:

"I'm amazed at how many people can quote dialogue from the original film, and I think this team has a fresh and modern approach to the story that will resonate in a brand-new way," Phillips said back in 2020.

Star Wars: Hayden Christensen Recalls Pitching George Lucas on Anakin Skywalker's "Sith Eyes" https://comicbook.com/starwars/news/star-wars-hayden-christensen-anakin-skywalker-sith-eyes-revenge-of-the-sith/ Wed, 28 Feb 2024 18:06:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh 1f74c223-7e0a-4b87-8668-4f8708125ec1

George Lucas created Star Wars and is considered by many to as the be-all-end-all source of authority on the galaxy far, far away, though that isn't to say that he isn't open to collaboration, as Hayden Christensen recently reflected on how he had suggested the idea of Anakin Skywalker developing "Sith eyes" in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. According to the actor, since Darth Maul and Emperor Palpatine both had yellowed, frightening eyes, he wanted Anakin to earn a similar physical transformation when fully committing to the dark side. Despite Lucas initially balking at the idea, he would come around on it and use the effect.

Speaking with Empire Magazine about the scene in which Anakin strikes down Mace Windu being the defining moment in Anakin's transition into Darth Vader, Christensen expressed, "That scene is the tipping point in Anakin's fall to the dark side. He has Mace Windu and Darth Sidious, Jedi and Sith, both pleading his allegiance and he has to make a choice. When we were filming that scene, George spoke about how Anakin was conflicted but not yet corrupted, and that he still wanted to do the right thing."

He continued, "It's a hugely transitional scene for the character and one that sets the course for everything that follows. I remember in the weeks leading up to filming it, I was trying to figure out how to express his turn and acceptance of the anointment of Darth Vader. It needed an observable shift in character and this was actually the origin of George and I discussing giving Anakin Sith eyes. Originally, there was no mention of it and George was initially against the idea when I brought it up. I loved the visual of Sith eyes and thought it could make sense: Darth Maul had them and Sidious has them. George responded saying that Count Dooku didn't, and I thought that was the end of that. A few days later he came back to me and said he thought about it some more and now liked the idea of Sith eyes -- but not for that scene. I think that was because it would have misinformed things. Anakin's fall to the dark side isn't just about good and evil and ideological views; it's also about timing and circumstance."

Christensen went on to recall how, while Lucas was ahead of his time in both storytelling and filmmaking sensibilities, he was always open to suggestions from collaborators who helped bring the prequel trilogy to life. However, Lucas would ultimately go with his initial instincts in the final product.

"George is a visionary and always knew exactly what he wanted, but when I had an idea he would always hear me out and consider it," Christensen confessed. "When I had an instinct on set and wanted to try something different than what we were doing, he would always indulge me. I remember on several occasions explaining what I wanted to try and George would say, 'Well I know when I get to the editing room and I've got your version and my version, I'm always going to use my version, but sure, let's give it a try.' And he was right, he always did use his version!"

Christensen returned to the galaxy far, far away for both Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi and Star Wars: Ahsoka though it is unknown when, or if, he will return to the franchise.

Sydney Sweeney Says There's a Good Chance Anyone But You Sequel Will Happen https://comicbook.com/movies/news/anyone-but-you-sydney-sweeney-tonight-show-sequel-chance/ Wed, 28 Feb 2024 17:21:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 34a421f7-0bf0-499e-9086-83d25d33bbd0

Anyone But You might be getting a sequel soon according to one of the film's stars. Sydney Sweeney dropped by The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to discuss the whirlwind success of Sony's surprising romantic comedy. Anyone But You has managed to earn more than $100 million at the box office. Sweeney has seen the response from movie goers and she thinks that a sequel could be in the works. "Maybe like, a high nine chance," the actress told Fallon when he asked about a possible sequel. As the box office rolls in that seems to be likely.

In a previous email to Bloomberg, director Will Gluck pointed out how the box office returns actually show audiences loving the elements that couldn't be outwardly marketed. "The success of Anyone But You has been led by the audience," he said back thenl. "They seem to have a great time watching it, feeling it, humming it -- and have echoed this to their friends, family and social media. And there is no better marketing than that."

What's The Plot Of Anyone But You?

Sony delivers a synopsis for the unsuspecting box office hit their under-the-radar hit: "In the edgy comedy Anyone But You, Bea (Sydney Sweeney) and Ben (Glen Powell) look like the perfect couple, but after an amazing first date something happens that turns their fiery hot attraction ice cold - until they find themselves unexpectedly thrust together at a destination wedding in Australia. So they do what any two mature adults would do: pretend to be a couple."

Romantic Chemistry Between The Leads

Anyone But You's true success comes down to chemistry between the leads, just like most romantic comedies. And, some speculation about a relationship between Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney didn't exactly hurt. Fans were really chirping about them dating in real life. However, Powell set the record straight with Business Insider.

"I'll pretty much give Sydney all the credit for this. I don't have the mental capacity to pull anything like this off, but she's very smart. She's very smart. And look, Sydney and I do have authentic chemistry..." Powell shared as the interviewer co-signed. The star had some other nice things to say. "I had such a wonderful journey with her on this thing. But in terms of actual dating and actually being together?," he had to laugh.

"Well, look, the only reason it made things harder for me to lean into that stuff was that I was going through a very real breakup amidst a promotional tour. I was with someone that I really loved and cared about and was trying to kind of make sense of a lot of stuff," he continued. "It was a lot easier for Sydney to lean into something like that because she's in a very committed and wonderful relationship and she's very happy. So it was a little harder for me."

The Watchers Trailer: Dakota Fanning Stars in Ishana Night Shyamalan's Debut Feature https://comicbook.com/horror/news/the-watchers-movie-ishana-night-shyamalan-dakota-fanning/ Wed, 28 Feb 2024 17:10:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh 4956c95d-b465-40bc-8cc8-5d4ae50e9712

The name "Shyamalan" has been synonymous with twists and turns in the world of horror, as M. Night Shyamalan's films The Sixth Sense, Split, and Knock at the Cabin have left a major impact on audiences, with the all-new horror film The Watchers set to continue the Shyamalan dynasty, as it's directed by his daughter Ishana Night Shyamalan. The Watchers has earned its first teaser trailer and it hints that Ishana is following in her father's footsteps, while also injecting all-new perspectives into the genre, furthering the skills she developed while bringing Apple TV+'s Servant to life. Check out the teaser trailer for The Watchers below before it lands in theaters on June 7th.

From producer M. Night Shyamalan comes The Watchers, written and directed by Ishana Night Shyamalan and based on the novel by A.M. Shine. The film follows Mina, a 28-year-old artist, who gets stranded in an expansive, untouched forest in western Ireland. When Mina finds shelter, she unknowingly becomes trapped alongside three strangers who are watched and stalked by mysterious creatures each night. You can't see them, but they see everything.

The Watchers stars Dakota Fanning (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Ocean's Eight), Georgina Campbell (Barbarian, Suspicion), Oliver Finnegan (Creeped Out, Outlander), and Olwen Fouere (The Northman, The Tourist). The film is produced by M. Night Shyamalan, Ashwin Rajan, and Nimitt Mankad. The executive producers are Jo Homewood and Stephen Dembitzer.

Joining writer/director Shyamalan behind the camera are director of photography Eli Arenson (Lamb, Hospitality), production designer Ferdia Murphy (Lola, Finding You), editor Job ter Burg (Benedetta, Elle), and costume design by Frank Gallacher (Sebastian, Aftersun). The music is by Abel Korzeniowski (Till, The Nun).

It's going to be an exciting summer for Shyamalan fans, as we not only get The Watchers, but we also get the new M. Night Shyamalan movie Trap. Earlier this month, star Josh Hartnett offered a brief tease of what fans can expect from the upcoming experience.

"It's a pivot [for me]," Hartnett told IndieWire of his role. "But I try to make all of my roles pivots. If you're playing the same thing again and again, it gets boring to the audience. Working with M. Night was one of the best experiences of my career. I think he's a true Artist in the capitol-A sense of the word. And I think people are gonna be really surprised and excited about the movie we make. It's very bizarre, very dark, and it's wild."

The Watchers lands in theaters on June 7th. Trap is set for an August 2nd release.

The Crow Reboot Finally Reveals First Look at Bill Skaarsgard in Iconic Role https://comicbook.com/movies/news/the-crow-reboot-finally-reveals-first-look-at-bill-skaarsgard-in-iconic-role/ Wed, 28 Feb 2024 15:56:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame bacded81-8e1f-46cb-9c68-57c7118da8be

Bill Skarsg?rd's Eric Draven is here. Lionsgate has finally revealed a first look at their long-awaited revival of The Crow, a franchise that had a surprisingly long life throughout the '90s and early 2000s. An adaptation of the James O'Barr indie comic of the same name, The Crow has been one of the most troubled productions in recent memory, trading off directors, stars, and even studios numerous times over the life of its development and production. The movie stars Skarsg?rd (IT), singer-songwriter FKA twigs (Honeyboy), and Danny Huston (Succession) and is reportedly a full restart of the franchise, meaning that it's likely adapting (at least loosely) the same set of comics as the first The Crow movie, which was released in 1994.

That first movie was a phenomenon, with a hit soundtrack and an aesthetic that felt like it was five years ahead of its time. The movie spawned three sequels, The Crow: City of Angels (1996); The Crow: Salvation (2000); and The Crow: Wicked Prayer (2005).

The revived The Crow has gone through a number of directors, stars, and even studios in the last decade in its long and troubled road to the big screen. Even after news came out that the movie had wrapped production, it didn't seem like a real thing that people would be actually able to watch.

"I think the beauty of Bill is that he has a disturbing beauty, and as he transforms through his loss he becomes this thing that even he can't control," director Rupert Sanders told Vanity Fair. "It's that famous line: 'Whoever fights monsters must be careful that they don't become one.' That look was me in the '90s when we were squat-raving in London, [mixed with some modern influences] like Post Malone and Lil Peep. I hope people who are 19 today look at him and go, 'That guy is us.'"

You can see the first look at 2024's The Crow (which leans hard into the The Cure-infused aesthetic of the character) below.

the-crow.png

"It's still very much a live property," James O'Barr during a 2015 panel hosted by ComicBook.com, shortly after one of the times the production fell apart. "The company, Pressman Films, that owns The Crow film and TV rights, licensed it to a studio named Relativity. And Relativity made like a hundred bad movies and lost money so now they're in financial trouble. So the producers are just going to take it to another studio if Relativity can't get backing again. It's going to happen. I talked to Pressman Films a couple of weeks ago and they said within two or three weeks, we should have it placed at a new studio. Because the day Relativity announced that they were having financial problems, there were like a dozen other studios that called about getting The Crow property. it definitely will happen."

Brandon Lee, the son of Hollywood icon Bruce Lee, starred in the original The Crow movie, and was tragically killed on set of the film when a prop gun misfired. Subsequent films went direct to video and starred Vincent P?rez, Eric Mabius, and Ed Furlong in the title role. As in the comics, the actors have played various different iterations of The Crow, with Eric Draven being one of three. Mark Dascascos took on the role in a TV adaptation, titled The Crow: Stairway to Heaven.

"Brandon was an original voice and I think he will always be synonymous with The Crow and I hope he's proud of what we've done and how we've brought the story back again," Sanders said. "His soul is very much alive in this film. There's a real fragility and beauty to his version of the Crow, and I think Bill feels like he is a successor to that."

The Crow is directed by Rupert Sanders (Foundation, Ghost in the Shell, Snow White and The Huntsman) and written by Zach Baylin (King Richard, upcoming Creed III). Producers are Molly Hassell (Braven, Terminal), Victor Hadida (Resident Evil and Silent Hill franchises), John Jencks (Honest Thief, Guns Akimbo), and Edward R. Pressman (American Psycho, The Crow, Wall Street).

Dune Actress Rebecca Ferguson Fires Shots at "Idiot" Co-star Who Screamed at Her On Set https://comicbook.com/movies/news/dune-rebecca-ferguson-idiot-costar-screamed-on-set/ Wed, 28 Feb 2024 15:52:00 +0000 Timothy Adams fa348fbf-9960-4fa9-b252-22c6323a8375

Dune: Part Two's Rebecca Ferguson revealed that one of her previous co-stars screamed at her on set, forcing her to defend herself while calling him an "idiot." The actress portrays Lady Jessica in the Denis Villeneuve sci-fi epic that releases in theaters this week, so the marketing machine is still chugging along. Dune: Part Two is tracking for a massive opening week at the box office, so it may be surprising to find something negative in the news. That's exactly what happened when Ferguson revealed details about her on-set drama with an unnamed co-star, though it doesn't appear to be about anyone from the Dune movies.

The Reign With Josh Smith podcast had Rebecca Ferguson on as a guest to talk about Dune: Part Two and her acting career. The topic shifted to a time when Ferguson "found her voice" on set, where she recounted being screamed at by an actor who was at the top of the call sheet. "I did a film with an absolute idiot of a co-star and this human being was being so insecure and angry because this person couldn't get the scenes out," Ferguson said.

How Dune's Rebecca Ferguson handled an uncomfortable situation on set

Rebecca Ferguson revealed how standing up to this co-star was the first time she ever defended herself on set, and how nervous she was going to work the next day. "You get off my set. You can F off," she told the unnamed actor. "I'm gonna work towards a tennis ball. I never want to see you again."

She added, "And then I remember the producers came up and said, 'You can't do this to number one. We have to let this person be on set.' And I said, 'The person can turn around and I can act to the back of the head.' And I did. I was so scared. I feel it now when I'm saying it."

The director of this movie eventually admitted to Ferguson that they weren't doing a good enough job creating a safe environment. Ferguson recounted the director saying, "You're right. I am not taking care of everyone else. I'm trying to fluff this person because it's so unstable."

I Saw the TV Glow: A24 Releases Trailer for Creepy Sundance Hit https://comicbook.com/horror/news/i-saw-the-tv-glow-a24-trailer-justice-smith-brigitte-lundy-paine-sundance/ Wed, 28 Feb 2024 15:03:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 4c4b7bfa-68e3-40b8-82b1-3d58533126cf

I Saw the TV Glow has a brand-new trailer after that buzzy Sundance Film Festival debut. Director Jane Schoenbrun is back on May 3rd with a trippy take on nostalgia and the existential dread of the suburbs with I Saw the TV Glow. A24 teased a trailer for the Letterboxd favorite yesterday and now fans who didn't make it all the way to the film festival are reacting to their first big look at the horror film. I Saw the TV Glow stars Justice Smith and Brigette Lundy-Paine as Owen and Maddy. They are two kids united in their love for a show called The Pink Opaque. Shared interest in the weird little program gives way to a bit of deeper understanding.

However, things are getting stranger in the suburbs as Maddy mysteriously disappears one day. All the authorities manage to find is her burning TV set in her backyard. When Owen reencounters the past, he begins to suspect that maybe The Pink Opaque wasn't really just a show they watched as kids. Other stars in this one include Ian Foreman, Helena Howard, Danielle Deadwyler, and Fred Durst. I Saw the TV Glow is written by Jane Scoenbrun. The movie is produced by Emma Stone, Ali Herting, Dave McCary, Sam Intili, and Sarah Winshall.

A24 and I Saw The TV Glow

i-saw-the-tv-glow-trailer.jpg
(Photo: A24)

For a lot of Sundance attendees, I Saw the TV Glow was pretty radical. Scheonbrun wanted it that way. The director talked to Collider about the idea of A24 movies as subversive and how they might stand out from big studios. For the filmmaker, the freedom to make exactly what they want on the screen really stood out.

"I just think that A24 has managed to brand themselves as the place where, at least in America, you're going to see something that you don't expect," Schoenbrun mused. "You're gonna see something that's defined by its difference from the mainstream. I think it's become colloquial in Hollywood, right? Where people are sort of like, 'I want to be in an A24-type movie.'"

"And so, that kind of power of the quote-unquote brand signifying something new or something different or something a little bit transgressive, is obviously really exciting when you're an artist trying to do exactly that," they continued. "So, after my first film, which again was a very microbudget, very small film, did pretty well here at Sundance a few years ago, I knew that the dream come true would be getting to make my sophomore feature with a company like A24."

A24 Moving To More Commercial Films

a24-logo.jpg
(Photo: A24)

A recent report said that A24 is looking for more actions and "big IP projects" now. TheWrap wrote about A24's Noah Sacco seeking out bigger movies and the company "deemphasizing the traditional character/auteur-driven dramas." Luckily, there will still be some space for the movies that helped define the brand. But, that report points to profitability as the main driver behind this decision. One agent surveyed just didn't think it was sustainable to make these smaller movies.

"On one hand, a large number of films being released means a larger library, which is obviously more attractive to prospective buyers," the agent told that outlet. "On the other hand, too many films crowds the marketplace. But the bottom line is that auteur films don't make any money and are super risky. It's just not a good long-term strategy. They have to have a good balance of both."

Disney Exec on Live-Action Snow White Movie

Back when the live-action Snow White remake was revealed to be happening, Sean Bailey, Walt Disney Pictures President of Production, dropped some insider knowledge on the upcoming movie.

"We were given an incredible opportunity to discover what we wanted to be as a live-action team. We were given a lot of latitude to think about what that was," Bailey said. "We thought if Iron Man and Thor and Captain America are Marvel superheroes, then maybe Alice, Cinderella, Mowgli, and Belle are our superheroes, and Cruella and Maleficent are our supervillains. Maybe if there's a way to reconnect with that affinity for what those characters mean to people in a way that gets the best talent and uses the best technology, that could become something really exciting. It feels very Disney, playing to the competitive advantages of this label."

"Rachel's extraordinary vocal abilities are just the beginning of her gifts," Webb previously said of Zegler's casting. "Her strength, intelligence and optimism will become an integral part of rediscovering the joy in this classic Disney fairytale."

Rachel Zegler leads Disney's Snow White alongside the Wonder Woman and Red Notice star Gal Gadot, who will play the Evil Queen. Webb helms the movie from a screenplay by Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird, Barbie) and Erin Cressida Wilson (Chloe, The Girl on the Train).

Snow White is expected to hit theaters on March 21, 2025.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Rating Revealed https://comicbook.com/movies/news/ghostbusters-frozen-empire-rating-revealed/ Wed, 28 Feb 2024 14:14:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 20fa3952-e4ce-42ca-ba6e-b4496eb88e0e

Ghostbusters: Afterlife has been rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association, according to their official Film Ratings website. The film -- the fourth in the main line Ghostbusters continuity and second in less than five years, got the rating "for supernatural action/violence, language and suggestive references," which sounds basically like every other movie in the franchise, so really there are no surprises there. The movie is a little under a month from release, with tickets going up for preorder soon, so with a rating now in place, expect to start seeing a lot more TV spots.

The new movie brings the action back to New York City, where the original Ghostbusters and their classic firehouse headquarters will be part of the action. The cast of 2021's Ghostbusters: Afterlife will be represented, too, with Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, and the kids from that movie returning to suit up alongside the seasoned veterans of the' 80s in a movie that is supposedly inspired, at least in part, by the manic, monster-heavy The Real Ghostbusters animated series.

When Ghostbusters: Afterlife was being promoted, filmmakers tried to keep it secret that Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson would not only return, but would strap on their proton packs one more time. With Frozen Empire, each of the three appear in the trailer, leaving a lot less room for speculation. Hudson, meanwhile, is staying pretty busy with the second season of the NBC hit Quantum Leap.

Frozen Empire has been described as a clean slate for the franchise, allowing them to move forward in a way Afterlife couldn't, because they had to address both the long absence of the Ghostbusters in-universe, and also the passing of Egon Spengler, whose family is a key part of the new generation of Ghostbusters.

In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the Spengler family returns to where it all started - the iconic New York City firehouse - to team up with the original Ghostbusters, who've developed a top-secret research lab to take busting ghosts to the next level. Original Road House Screenwriter Files Lawsuit Against Amazon https://comicbook.com/movies/news/original-road-house-screenwriter-files-lawsuit-against-amazon/ Wed, 28 Feb 2024 02:51:00 +0000 Nicole Drum 6f762026-5c8a-44f6-804f-b09de427b199

The screenwriter of the original 1989 Road House film is suing Metro Goldwyn Mayer Studios and parent company Amazon Studios for copyright infringement. According to Variety, R. Lance Hill -- who uses the pen name David Lee Henry -- is claiming in his lawsuit that Amazon ignored his ability to reclaim rights to his original screenplay and went forward with their Road House remake starring Jake Gyllenhaal which will debut March 21st on Prime Video.

According to the specifics of the lawsuit, Hill claims that in 2021 he filed a petition with the. U.S. Copyright Office requesting that the copyright to Road House return to him once United Artists' claim expired in November 2023. The lawsuit also alleges that Amazon ignored the claims, going forward with the film and even using artificial intelligence to replicate the voices of the film's actors in order to complete ADR during the SAG-AFTRA strike so that they could finish film prior to the November 10th deadline. Hill claims that work on Road House wasn't actually completed until January 2024 -- months after the copyright deadline.

"On Nov. 11, 2023, the Screenplay's copyright thereby duly reverted to Hill under the Copyright Act. Yet, in contravention of the Act's fundamental authorial termination right, Defendants refused to acknowledge Hill's statutory termination," the suit reads. "Instead, Defendants steamrolled ahead with the production of a remake of the 1989 Film derived from Hill's Screenplay."

Interestingly, this isn't the first time there have been AI-related allegations when it comes to the Road House remake. According to Variety's report, sources alleged that producer Joel Silver, who was fired from Amazon in November over verbal abuse, was instead actually being fired over concerns regarding Amazon's use of AI to complete Road House.

Amazon denies the use of AI in making Road House and called Hill's lawsuit "without merit" in a statement.

"The lawsuit filed by R. Lance Hill regarding 'Road House' today is completely without merit and numerous allegations are categorically false. The film does not use any AI in place of actors' voices. We look forward to defending ourselves against these claims," the statement reads.

What is the Road House Reboot About?

The description for Prime Video's Road House reads, "In this adrenaline-fueled reimagining of the 80s cult classic, ex-UFC fighter Dalton (Jake Gyllenhaal) takes a job as a bouncer at a Florida Keys roadhouse, only to discover that this paradise is not all it seems."

Anthony Bagarozzi (The Nice Guys) and Charles Mondry (Doc Savage) wrote the script for the new Road House. Joel Silver, whose credits include the original Road House as well as Lethal Weapon and Predator, is producing via his Silver Pictures. JJ Hook (6 Underground, The Lost City), Alison Winter (The Wall, Chaos Walking), and Aaron Auch (Orphan, The Losers) are also executive producers. The film stars Gyllenhaal, Conor McGregor, Billy Magnussen (No Time To Die), Daniela Melchior (The Suicide Squad), Gbemisola Ikumelo (A League of Their Own), Lukas Gage (Euphoria), Hannah Love Lanier (The Tiny Mighty Club), Travis Van Winkle (You), B.K. Cannon (Why Women Kill), Arturo Castro (Broad City), Dominique Columbus (Ray Donovan), Beau Knapp (The Lost Symbol), Bob Menery (Full Send Podcast), Joaquim de Almeida (Fast X), Darren Barnet (Agents of SHIELD), Kevin Carroll (Showtime's Let the Right One In), and JD Pardo (Mayans M.C.).

Road House (2024) is scheduled to be released on March 21st.

Hans Zimmer Hid the Dune: Part Two Theme in Plain Sight https://comicbook.com/movies/news/hans-zimmer-secretly-played-dune-part-two-theme-tour-movie-spoilers/ Wed, 28 Feb 2024 01:54:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson b4257566-2795-48ea-bb31-a72c7f1263da

Dune: Part Two arrives in theaters in just a matter of days, and the sci-fi epic has already earned quite a lot of praise. In addition to its star-studded ensemble cast and distinct source material, the Dune franchise has been praised for Hans Zimmer's award-winning score, with the sequel expected to up the sonic ante even further. As Zimmer revealed in a recent interview with The Wrap, he has actually already previewed part of his Dune: Part Two score, playing the film's main theme during as the opening song for his recent concert tour. Zimmer did not identify the theme when asked by fans, because he wanted the audience to discover the piece's true origin once they saw the entire movie.

"The main theme, really, for this one, I did something very naughty," Zimmer revealed. "I toured it with my band through Europe, and I would play it as the opening to our set, and no one knew what the piece of music was. I thought, a year later, wouldn't it be cool to go to the cinema and they hear this piece of music and they go, 'Oh, it's weirdly familiar!'"

Will There Be a Dune 3?

As fans of Frank Herbert's books know, the grand narrative of Dune extends far beyond the events of the first book, which has led to a lot of speculation about whether or not Dune: Messiah could become the franchise's next film. Dune director Denis Villeneuve has teased that a script for Dune: Messiah exists, and that he is focusing on telling the best possible distillation of the source material.

"I'm working on four different screenplays -- I know that Dune: Messiah will be one of them, I don't know if it will be the next or the second next," Villeneuve shared in an interview earlier this year. "My job was to try to keep the spirit of Frank Herbert alive as much as possible -- the whole meaning of Dune becomes clear with Dune: Messiah."

Moana 2: Original Star Auli'i Cravalho Returning for Sequel https://comicbook.com/movies/news/moana-2-disney-movie-aulii-cravalho-returning-cast-sequel/ Wed, 28 Feb 2024 01:01:00 +0000 Charlie Ridgely c3c0e5af-64b1-4ed8-a037-6f273077d885

The original voice of Moana is returning to Motunui for Disney's highly anticipated sequel. Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger surprised the industry earlier this month when he announced that Moana 2 was not only in the works, but that it would be released in theaters this coming November. When the announcement was first made, it was unclear whether the original film's two stars would be reprising their roles.

According to Deadline, Auli'i Cravalho is coming back to once again voice the titular Moana. The publication's report suggested that she and Dwayne Johnson, who voiced Maui, had both been in talks with Disney about their returns, but things hadn't been made official when Moana 2 was announced. They're now both expected to be back and leading the sequel.

Disney had initially planned to continue the story of Moana as a streaming series on Disney+. However, as the project started coming together, and the popularity of the original Moana soared, Disney made the decision to turn the series into a feature film for theaters.

Disney announced that Moana 2 is hitting theaters on November 27th, keeping in the tradition of releasing an animated film around Thanksgiving every year. The film is directed by Dave Derrick Jr. featuring music from Abigail Barlow, Emily Bear, Opetaia Foa'i, and Mark Mancina. Lin Manuel Miranda won't be coming back to write songs for Moana 2.

Moana Live-Action Movie

In addition to Moana 2, Disney is also working on a live-action version of the first Moana film. Dwayne Johnson is producing the live-action film and reprising his role as Maui. In that film, however, Cravalho won't be playing the titular role. A new actress will be taking over the role, but Cravalho is set to be an executive producer.

The live-action Moana is being directed by Hamilton's Thomas Kail. Original Moana writer Jared Bush wrote the new screenplay alongside Dana Ledoux Miller.

As it stands right now, the live-action Moana is slated to be released in theaters in 2025, but that could change very soon. The news of Moana 2's release this fall has led to reports that the live-action adaptation will be delayed, allowing the franchise a little room to breathe. Disney has yet to make an official announcement about the film's status.

Are you looking forward to seeing Moana 2 in theaters later this year? Let us know in the comments!

Mean Girls Cuts Out Controversial Lindsay Lohan Joke for Home Video Release https://comicbook.com/movies/news/mean-girls-2024-lindsay-lohan-joke-cut-edited-out-digital-release/ Wed, 28 Feb 2024 00:13:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw 668af409-77c0-4564-81ec-255a602b5642

Mean Girls (2024) has apparently cut out a joke about Mean Girls (2004) star Lindsay Lohan, which had been the source of controversy.

The movie adaptation of the Mean Girls stage musical follows many of the same beats as the original film - but obviously has to factor in one big societal change of the last twenty years: social media. Tweets and TikToks are thrown around aggressively in Mean Girls (2024), as the school community, local community, and even online community influencers and stars all get in on the reign of queen Regina George (Rene? Rapp) and the rise of would-be challenger for the high school crown, new girl Cady Heron (Angourie Rice). Like in the original Mean Girls, the new version sees Cady's social status after a pivotal turn at the Winter Talent Show.

In the original, the Plastics' dance routine going wrong is an embarrassment limited to those in the attending audience; in Mean Girls (2024), the Plastics have to see their embarrassing moment go viral on social media. It becomes the will of the online masses that Cady becomes the new queen of the Plastics - and even Megan Thee Stallion co-signs the change in lineup.

Originally, Mean Girls (2024) featured a cut scene of social media reactions to Plastics' dance routine featuring a cameo by Megan Thee Stallion, who declares to her "Hotties" (i.e. fans) that "We are going back to red! Y2K fire crotch is back!" The line is a reference to Lindsay Lohan's infamous nickname, which began with a 2006 Papapprazzi video of Paris Hilton and friend, oil fortune heir Brandon Davis leaving a club. In that video, a seemingly inebriated Davis went on a tirade about Lindsay Lohan, grossly disparaging her body in a way that would certainly get one canceled in the era of Twitter. "Fire Crotch" became the safest soundbite from rant for publications and talk shows to run with, and Lohan soon found herself often being verbally accosted by those imitating or referencing the original video.

The Messenger reported that Lindsay Lohan was "very hurt and disappointed" that the joke from Megan Thee Stallion made it into the theatrical cut of Mean Girls (2024). Lohan makes a cameo appearance in the climax of the film, and apparently didn't know the line was in the movie until she saw it at the premiere.

Mean Girls (2024) Cuts Controversial Lindsay Lohan Joke

(Photo: Paramount Pictures)

Popculture Planet reporter Kristen Maldonado has watched the digital release of Mean Girls (2024) and quickly spotted something different: the joke about fire crotch is gone. "It seems it has been removed for the film's digital release," Maldonado writes, "During my re-watch of the film, I noticed that Megan Thee Stallion's line now ends at "We are going back red" and jumps to her laughing, cutting out 'Y2K fire crotch is back' entirely."

By today's standards, the entire incident with Lindsay Lohan and that nickname seems grossly inappropriate - and the objections to it being a joke played for laughs are understandable. Especially if you're Lindsay Lohan.

Mean Girls (2024) is now available of VOD and digital release.

The Marvels Star Brie Larson Celebrates Disney+ Release With BTS Post https://comicbook.com/movies/news/the-marvels-brie-larson-behind-the-scenes-disney-plus-streaming/ Tue, 27 Feb 2024 23:45:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt a1870763-3497-4bb5-9632-72434b00c4c5

Now that The Marvels is streaming on Disney+, the actors involved in the show have been given the ability to take fans on a journey behind the filming of the movie. Tuesday, Captain Marvel star Brie Larson took to social media to share some of the snapshots she's holding back. Not only is Larson in the pictures on the set of her Captain Marvel follow-up, but Ms. Marvel's Iman Vellani has a presence as well.

"ICYMI, The Marvels is now on Disney+," Larson said on Instagram alongside a series of pictures, which you can see below.

Are we getting Captain Marvel 3?

Though it once appeared a Captain Marvel franchise was a guarantee given the stellar box office performance of the property's first film, The Marvels earned the MCU's smallest box office haul. When asked about her MCU future earlier this month, Larson bluntly said she didn't "have anything to say about that."

There's also been speculation Ms. Marvel could end up receiving a second season given the character's popularity, but Marvel Studios hasn't confirmed anything on that front either.

"No, we're waiting for The Marvels, so that will decide what the next step will be," Ms. Marvel helmer Adil El Arbi said on an episode of The Discourse podcast last year. "So we're very much looking forward to that. I can't wait to see it, man. It's great to see the trailers and to see the whole family back there and Iman Vellani doing great work, so looking forward to that."

What is The Marvels about?

In The Marvels, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan, Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol's estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris). Together, this unlikely trio must team-up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as "The Marvels." The Marvels will also see the franchise returns of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Saagar Shaikh as Aamir Khan, Zenobia Shroff as Muneeba Khan, and Mohan Kapur as Yusuf Khan. New cast members include Zawe Ashton, Park Seo-joon, and Shamier Anderson. Produced by Marvel Studios, The Marvels is directed by Nia DaCosta with a script from DaCosta, Megan McDonnell, and Elissa Karasik.

The Marvels and Captain Marvel are both now streaming on Disney+.

Where do you want to see Carol Danvers pop up next? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section!

Why Are People Freaking Out About Captain Marvel? https://comicbook.com/movies/news/marvel-mcu-brie-larson-captain-marvel-2-avengers-future-addressed/ Tue, 27 Feb 2024 23:15:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 606b2fc4-2fe8-444a-bbd8-7c41e093387f

Captain Marvel has been a topic of conversation this week and a lot of people have been making a big deal about her. Extra caught up with Brie Larson on the awards circuit and asked about her Marvel future. When the actress said, "I don't have anything to say about that," chaos ensued on social media. But, does that small aside really mean there won't be anymore Captain Marvel in the MCU? Is Captain Marvel 3 not happening anymore? Well, the first one is hysterically unlikely and the second one is cloudy at best right now. Here's why everyone is freaking out about Captain Marvel.

First, a little recent Marvel history. The Marvels underperformed against projections as a result of numerous factors. (Launching during a dual actors and writers strike that cut promotion off at the knees, Marvel Studios seemingly pivoting on marketing the movie three times, and of course, a summer at the movies that saw all but a handful of films underperform as a result of those strikes paired with some corporate-gouging-influenced inflation to boot.) Mix all of that into the constant observer-led navel gazing about the theater system and the picture starts to take shape.

the-marvels-ms-marvel-post-credit-clip.jpg
(Photo: Marvel Entertainment)

One thing that didn't help The Marvels was its close proximity to Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Secret Invasion. Both of these Marvel Studios efforts weren't well-received by critics or fans in the way a majority of the studio's output tends to be. So, there was just an ill-wind all around. An absolutely tough hand for director Nia DaCosta to maneuver through. (The movie is the highest-grossing box office performance for a Black female director) Still, the path forward isn't as clear as it might have been two years ago.

The Idea Of Superhero Fatigue And The MCU

secret-invasion-marvel-fatigue.jpg

As a larger part of the conversation around these movies, critics have decried "superhero fatigue" as evidence for the recent swaths of underperformance. Such tidy explanations fails to explain why a majority of last year's blockbusters failed to take hold. (In this area, the continued effect of the pandemic, streaming habits and numerous worldwide real-world events might loom larger than a lot of observers are willing to admit to themselves.) Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was universally beloved. Black Panther's sequel managed more than 800 million in this post-reopening climate. Spider-Man continues to print money.

Clearly, this idea of superhero fatigue is selective at best and disingenuously deployed at worst. Last November, Disney CEO Bob Iger pointed towards executive oversight when pinpointing what happened with The Marvels. "The Marvels was shot during COVID," Iger told onlookers at The New York Times' DealBook Summit. "There wasn't as much supervision on the set, so to speak, where we have executives [that are] really looking over what's being done day after day after day."

That first part is true and might be the most important part of the statement. Keep in mind how many media reports there have been about pivots, of projects being shuffled due to the ongoing health emergency. Is it any wonder things may have felt disjointed. Also, Marvel Studios probably should have ushered in a team-up movie before Phase 4's end because of the fans' constant outcries for it. They underestimated how impatient a lot of them would become in "The Multiverse Saga."

So, What's The Path Forward?

captain-america-4-deadpool-3-release-date.jpg
(Photo: Marvel Entertainment)

Well, to be brief, cohesion. Deadpool & Wolverine just broke the record for most trailer views ever. That movie is set to move The Multiverse Saga right along. (You don't put a Secret Wars comic book in the trailer if you don't plan to speed things up expeditiously.) They're also putting more characters together. Daredevil is coming next year with all the familiarity you could imagine. Captain America: Brave New World would be a natural place for some more appearances. Later this year, Agatha is poised to bring back mid-pandemic favorites from the Marvel show literally everyone watched. So, getting the band back together is the move.

Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani told The Direct that getting these people together and establishing connection is the way forward. She's assembling a group of Young Avengers as we speak. There's virtually no way Marvel Studios doesn't have one of the strongest Avengers on-hand whenever Secret Wars gets rolling. So, buckle up and mute some words on Twitter because the ride is not over yet.

doctor-strange-2-young-avengers-childrens-crusade.jpg
(Photo: Marvel Entertainment)

"I don't know. I don't know if it's about just getting bigger and bigger and bigger. Because then, like, what's left? You know, I think it's just about making the audience care about their characters," Vellani told the outlet. "And I think they've established so many wonderful characters in the last phase of the MCU that it would be nice to see them all again and see them team up."

"I think, because there are so many new characters people want to like, start shipping people together and be like, 'Oh, seeing Kamala and like the Red Guardian together,'" the actor Continued. "Like imagining all these pair-ups, and I think that would definitely pay off. It'll be like, you know, the next Avengers."

James Gunn Teases How New DC Studios Updates Could Be Announced https://comicbook.com/movies/news/james-gunn-dc-studios-dcu-updates-teased/ Tue, 27 Feb 2024 23:03:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt 56af5931-d926-49ef-a08e-fa2ac5e4ea4b

DC Universe announcements could be coming soon in a variety of formats. Taking a break from pre-production on Superman: Legacy, DC Studios boss James Gunn has spent some time Tuesday responding to fan questions on Threads. In one of the inquiries, a fan asked if more DCU announcements would take place either at San Diego Comic-Con or during a livestream.

"Those are our only two choices?" Gunn responded, hinting announcements could surface through means other than a Hall H panel or social media video.

Post by @jamesgunn
View on Threads

The fan question comes just days after Warner Bros. boss David Zaslav teased impending announcements regarding the franchise, though he didn't set a clear timetable on more announcements.

"I've had a glimpse into what James and Peter are doing, and it really does serve as an exciting indicator of where the new DC is headed under their leadership," Zaslav said in the company's latest earnings call. "There'll be more you'll hear from them in the months ahead...We'll have James and Peter take you through in the next few months a full spectrum of what they see over the next 10 years."

What Is Superman: Legacy About?

Per DC Studios, Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman's journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and a better tomorrow, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.

"It's not an origin story," DC Studios co-head Peter Safran told reporters last year. "It focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. Superman represents truth, justice, and the American way. He has kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old fashioned."

The DC Universe officially kicks off with Creature Commandos, which has yet to set a release date, and Superman: Legacy, which enters theaters July 11, 2025.

The Purge 6 Star Claims Hopeful Sequel Will Definitively End the Franchise https://comicbook.com/horror/news/the-purge-6-franchise-ending-frank-grillo-comment-reaction-franchise-future/ Tue, 27 Feb 2024 22:17:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh aa33e8b7-975c-438c-babf-99ec7d28fad2

The Purge franchise launched in 2013 with the debut film and has spawned a global phenomenon, as the concept has cemented itself as a reference for sanctioned lawlessness, and frequent star Frank Grillo claims that if The Purge 6 ends up happening, it'll be the final chapter in the saga. In addition to earning five feature films and taking in millions at the global box office, the concept of 12 hours in which violent crimes are legal also inspired two seasons of a TV series. With each installment seeing dwindling returns, Grillo confirms it's a matter of whether or not Universal Pictures wants to actually spend the money to bring the project to life.

"The script is done. It basically centers around Leo Barnes, my character. It would be the last of the last of the last, it's like the guy who keeps retiring," Grillo confirmed to Screen Rant. "[Franchise creator] James DeMonaco is going to direct it, if it happens, and it's a matter of money. It's a matter of how big they want the movie to be, how much money they want to spend on the movie, considering they've done a lot in this franchise. But it's a great script."

Grillo starred in the second and third installments of the series, The Purge: Anarchy and The Purge: Election Year, which feasibly served as a contained trilogy. 2018 saw the debut of The First Purge, which explored the creation of the violent tradition, while 2021's The Forever Purge took place after the events of the first three movies and delivered a world in which the violence failed to be contained to 12 hours.

DeMonaco similarly expressed last year that he was ready to move forward on the film, though that it was a decision that was up to Universal, while also hinting at the intense nature of the world he has created.

"I wrote the script. Universal has seen it," the filmmaker confirmed to The Playlist last July. "There are concerns about budget, but it definitely presents a fractured America ... The America I present in Purge 6 is where we are all separated by ideology and sexual preference. So, the states are broken down in different ways."

He continued, "It's written, it's in [Universal's] hands. I think they're scared about the budget. But my thing was if I was going to come back and direct a sixth one, it was going to be something bigger and a little more epic in scope, with this new America I want to present and bringing back [Frank Grillo's] character. So, it's kinda in limbo."

Stay tuned for updates on a possible The Purge 6.

Halle Berry Shares Video of Her Epic Catwoman Razzie Award Speech While Holding Her Oscar https://comicbook.com/irl/news/halle-berry-catwoman-razzie-awards-speech-worst-actress-with-oscar/ Tue, 27 Feb 2024 22:16:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw 53f2c7bd-55f1-4fee-8b0a-a7f606dadc21

Halle Berry is letting social media "rediscover" one of her most epic moments in the movie business: the speech she gave at the Razzie Awards after winning the "Worst Actress" award for Catwoman at the 25th Razzie Awards in 2004.

Berry had just won the Oscar for "Best Actress" in 2002 for her performance in Marc Forster's Monster's Ball, before taking on the role of (wait for it) "Patience Phillips," the version of Catwoman created for director Pitof's 2004 superhero movie - which had nothing to do with Batman, Selina Kyle, or any DC lore outside of an Easter egg photo of Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman from Batman Returns. Instead of becoming a major superhero franchise star, Halle Berry saw her career stumble out of its 2000s heyday of X-Men, Bond girl franchise stardom and Oscars glory; she would give solid performances in hit-or-miss projects for years thereafter. At the very least, Berry got a whopping $12.5 million payday for doing Catwoman - and despite it stlll being regarded as one of the worst comic book movies ever made, Catwoman has aged into being appreciated as ironic cringe, and comes with the now-standard Film Twitter apologists.

More than anything: no one can argue at this point that Halle Berry's Catwoman was one of the hottest superhero characters we've seen onscreen - or that the actress didn't handle the "infamy" around the film like a total champ. Case in point:

WATCH: Halle Berry's Epic Razzie Awards Speech for Catwoman

"I never in my life thought that I would be up here, winning a Razzie! It's not like I ever aspired to be here, but thank you," Berry says at the start of the speech, mockingly recreating her emotional winning speech at the Oscars. "When I was a kid, my mother told me that if you could not be a good loser, then there's no way you could be a good winner."

"I've got so many people to thank because you don't win a Razzie without a lot of help from a lot of people." Berry continued, in clear winking sarcasm. "First of all, I want to thank Warner Brothers, for putting me in a piece-of-sh*t, godawful movie. It was just what my career needed! I was at the top, and then Catwoman just plummeted me to the bottom. Love it! It's hard being on top. It's much better being on the bottom."

While Halley Berry cut the clip of her speech of there in the Twitter X post, the actual speech went to a much sharper place. Berry actually called out her manager at the time, Vincent Cirrincione, as the reason she had to do Catwoman:

"I want to thank my manager Vincent Cirrincione. This guy loves me. He loves me so much that he convinces me to do projects even when he knows they're sh*t! That's how much he really loves me. My only advice to you is next time I do a movie, if I get a chance to do another movie, maybe you should read the script. Just counting the zeros behind the one really isn't enough. You really have to read the script. I love you, man. Love you."

Cirrincione closed his agency in 2018 after receiving multiple allegations of sexual misconduct against several women. Halle Berry soon after revealed in a public statement that tshe had broken off her 25-year working relationship with Cirrincione years prior due to hearing allegations from other women in the industry about his conduct.

Given all the circumstances surrounding it, it's even more comforting to see that Halle Berry can now look at Catwoman and laugh with so many of us about it.

Catwoman (2004) is currently streaming on Max and Amazon Prime Video.

Dune Part 2 Set for Massive Opening Weekend at the Box Office https://comicbook.com/movies/news/dune-part-2-set-for-massive-opening-weekend-at-the-box-office/ Tue, 27 Feb 2024 21:54:00 +0000 Nicole Drum 6ccd0b61-7af9-4a64-a3f7-9dd068326431

Dune: Part Two opens in theaters this week and the film is tracking for a truly epic opening weekend at the box office. According to Deadline, the second part of Denis Villeneuve's adaptation of Frank Herbert's classic novel Dune is expected to have a $170 million opening weekend at global box office. That breaks down to an estimated $80 at the domestic box office and between $85 and $90 million overseas. 2021's Dune had a $41 million domestic opening, though that film also saw a day-and-date release on HBO Max which impacted those numbers.

The idea that Dune: Part Two will be a strong box office performer is bolstered by the reviews. Dune: Part Two presently has a 97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising not only the film's look and feel, but also its sophisticated approach to the complex story. ComicBook.com's Patrick Cavanaugh gave Dune: Part Two a four out of five rating, noting that "Villeneuve continues to circumvent expectations and, while there was the opportunity to offer up more bombast than the debut film, instead focuses on the tragic elements of Paul Atreides, serving instead as a cautionary tale of anyone deeming themselves to be a messiah."

The big-screen epic Dune: Part Two includes Timoth?e Chalamet , Zendaya , Rebecca Ferguson , Josh Brolin , Austin Butler , Florence Pugh , Dave Bautista , Christopher Walken , Stephen McKinley Henderson , and L?a Seydoux , with Stellan Skarsg?rd , Charlotte Rampling , and Javier Bardem . Denis Villeneuve directed from a screenplay he co-wrote with Jon Spaihts based on Frank Herbert 's iconic novel.

Anya Taylor-Joy Will Also Appear in Dune: Part Two

It was recently revealed that Anya Taylor-Joy will also appear in Dune: Part Two, a detail that Villeneuve had kept from fans for months. The director recently explained that he kept the secret as a "gift" to surprise audiences so close to the film's release on March 1st.

"I think that Hollywood is the most gossipy town on earth and I wanted, as an experiment, to see how long we could keep a secret," Villeneuve said. "We did it. It was a special unit, we went to Africa to shoot with Anya under super-secrecy. I just loved the idea to keep something as a surprise for the audience until the very end; it was like a gift I wanted to keep for the fans."

Dune: Part Two opens in theaters on March 1st.

Superman: Legacy's James Gunn Debunks New Rumor About Budget https://comicbook.com/movies/news/superman-legacy-james-gunn-debunk-new-rumor-budget/ Tue, 27 Feb 2024 21:43:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson e27abb67-d058-4a38-aa5d-95f1cd369ae2

James Gunn and Peter Safran are confirmed to be resetting the DC Universe, debuting a string of movies and Max-exclusive television shows in the next few years. The first cinematic venture for the new DCU will be Superman: Legacy, which is written and directed by Gunn and is set to begin production in the very near future. In a recent post on Threads, Gunn set the record straight on one new reported aspect of Superman: Legacy -- its potential filming budget. A report from BizJournals.com suggested that the film's production budget is $364 million, which would be the second-most-expensive superhero movie of all time after only Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Gunn confirmed that the report does not accurately reflect Superman: Legacy's budget at all, writing "Absolutely not. ? How in the world do they think they know what our budget is?"

"We got James Gunn and Peter (Safran) working very hard on DC, which is going to be a very big growth driver for this company," Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav explained last year. "We are very bullish on DC. The Superman script first draft is done. Gunn is on a mission from god. It is a really good moment to prove out on DC what we got and how strong it is globally for long-term sustainable growth."

Who Will Star in Superman: Legacy?

Superman: Legacy will star David Corenswet as Clark Kent / Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Terence Rosemore as Otis, Mar?a Gabriela de Far?a as Angela Spica / The Engineer, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt / Mr. Terrific, and Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason / Metamorpho.

"We've been having a lot of great conversations, David and I, with James Gunn, the director," Brosnahan revealed in a recent interview. "We've been talking a lot about where this project fits into the canon of the Supermans that we know. So hopefully, this'll be... we'll be putting our own stamp on things."

When Will Superman: Legacy Be Released?

Superman: Legacy is currently scheduled to be released in theaters on July 11, 2025, with Gunn previously confirming that the film will not be delayed due to last year's Hollywood strikes.

"It may seem far away to many of you, but it's close to me!" Gunn previously wrote of the release date on social media. "We have a lot to do between now and then. But I haven't been more excited about a project in forever... and this cast, slowly coming together... holy cow..."

Barbie "I'm Just Ken" Song Origin Revealed https://comicbook.com/movies/news/barbie-im-just-ken-song-ryan-gosling-oscars-story-jimmy-fallon-mark-ronson/ Tue, 27 Feb 2024 19:56:00 +0000 Aaron Perine cb7313a8-a618-453e-b2a0-b63cf646c789

Barbie composer Mark Ronson revealed how he came up with "I'm Just Ken." The musician stopped by The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon last night to talk about the movie's whirlwind success. He actually shared that he had the idea for "I'm Just Ken" while he was walking around. Those words and "anywhere else I'd be a ten" were the first kernels of Barbie's super-hit. From there, the producer assembled his songwriting partner and they got to work. Ronson actually supplied the rough vocal for the song in the early going. Fallon actually discovered that the composer still had the voice note on his phone and he played it for the crowd!

"I knew nothing, I really didn't," Ronson revealed when asked about early Barbie conversations. "You know, we were asked to come in and write two songs, and I wrote 'Dance the Night.' That became "the" track. That's the jam. So, I was just so inspired. I thought--Greta Gerwig is just so amazing. I love the script. And, so we wrote Ken. And then, we started to do a little bit more and more music for the film. We just loved it and we wanted to do the whole thing."

"That's what we were kind of hoping to do because Ken is like the character, and Ryan Gosling, who's just so incredible in the film. He's so ridiculous, but yet, you feel all his pain, I feel like," he added. "So, I was walking down the street, and I don't usually write lyrics. I usually come up with the music, but I just had that line. Like, 'I'm just Ken, anywhere else I'd be a ten.' You know? I just thought, this guy is so hot, but he can't get what he needs in life, which is the love of this woman. So, I came up with that line, went to the piano and came up with some chords. Then, my brother Andrew, my songwriting partner, came over and we wrote the rest of the song."

Ryan Gosling Performing At The Oscars

ryan-gostling-reaction-oscar-nominations-snubs-barbie-margot-robbie-greta-gerwig-2024.jpg

Ryan Gosling is the man who brought Ken to life and now he'll be sharing that joy with the world. Variety reported that the Barbie star would be performing "I'm Just Ken" at The Oscars this year. It's a big moment for the televised ceremony. Although Gosling's song faces steep competition from other songs on the same project like "What Was I Made For" by Billie Eilish, the people demanded Ken and they're going to get it. (It probably won't hurt the ratings either because of the recent push to get viewership back in front of the TV.)

When Variety previously asked Gosling about performing, he remained coy about it. But, it's clear this is a bit of dream for him and Ronson. "Well, I haven't been invited. And I wasn't thinking about it until now, and now it's all I'm going to think about," Gosling smirked during a lengthy profile. "Do you get paid to sing at the Oscars? Do you have to drive yourself? What kind of scratch is involved? They pick you up at least, right?"

Ronson Pushed For "I'm Just Ken" At The Oscars

For the Barbie producer, this is a whole lot to digest. From the sounds of things, his star singer is in the same boat. THR asked about how Gosling was adjusting to the adulation. Ronson told them that he's just gobsmacked by all the love from people he's never even met.

"He kind of feels like someone who doesn't get caught up in the hype from the little bit that now I know about him," Ronson shared, explaining that he would send Gosling updates on the milestones reached by "I'm Just Ken." "Even he'd be like, 'This is so surreal, I don't even know what to tell you.' I think he's a real musician, he loves music, and I think he was really touched by that and like when Slash played on it, you know? So there's certain things that he's been really, I think, excited about."

Road House Star Jake Gyllenhaal Addresses Conflicting Reports About Reboot's Release Strategy https://comicbook.com/movies/news/road-house-reboot-jake-gyllenhaal-streaming-theaters-reaction-explained/ Tue, 27 Feb 2024 19:56:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh 03555353-4613-4846-8bcf-31cc8bcbd700

The last few years have been a bit of a tumultuous time for movies, as the growth of streaming platforms has seen highly anticipated projects come to life in these markets, while some of these companies have also been able to expand their markets to offer theatrical experiences. The upcoming Road House reboot has found itself at the center of unexpected conflicts regarding its debut, as director Doug Liman claims he was developing the project for a theatrical release and that Amazon Studios changed the plan and it will instead be a streaming-only movie, yet star Jake Gyllenhaal is now pushing back against Liman's claims. Road House is set to hit Prime Video on March 21st.

"I adore Doug's tenacity, and I think he is advocating for filmmakers, and film in the cinema, and theatrical releases. But, I mean, Amazon was always clear that it was streaming," Gyllenhaal confirmed to Total Film, per GamesRadar. "I just want as many people to see it as possible. And I think we're living in a world that's changing in how we see and watch movies, and how they're made. What's clear to me, and what I loved so much, was [Liman's] deep love for this movie, and his pride at how much he cares for it, how good he feels it is, and how much people should see it."

He continued, "I've also sat watching a film on my computer, or in different places, and been so profoundly moved. If the job of a story is to move people, I have been moved in both forms. I'm a deep lover of cinema and the theatrical release - but I also do really embrace the streaming world."

The film was originally being developed by MGM, though during development, Amazon acquired the studio, understandably complicating the film's future. Back in January, Liman shared an open letter about his experience, claiming that he wouldn't be in attendance at the film's premiere at next month's South by Southwest Film Festival.

Earlier this month, however, a report from Variety claimed that during the development process, Liman was offered the opportunity to either have a smaller budget and get a theatrical release or earn a larger budget to send the movie straight to streaming, the latter deal he took.

Road House is set to premiere on Prime Video on March 21st.

Spaceman Director Reveals the Film Originally Had a Very Different Ending https://comicbook.com/movies/news/netflix-adam-sandler-spaceman-ending-different-director-reveals/ Tue, 27 Feb 2024 18:10:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 315ab3af-67e7-4e60-af03-5aaff96a712d

Spaceman director Johan Renck says that the ending of the movie wasn't always the same. ComicBook.com caught up with the filmmaker for the Netflix science fiction project. Renck told us that they swapped the original planned ending for something with a bit of a more hopeful tone. Spaceman filmed during the pandemic and Renck admits that the global outlook could have affected his feelings about the ending. People's hope is really remarkable at the end of the day, and that ray of light ended up factoring into the director's decision. Check it out up above!

"No, they did not always plan for that. And, it's funny how that kind of works because to some extent, anything you do is going to be very much subjected to where you are on your personal journey at that very moment," Renck mused. "We shot this film during the pandemic. At the sort of 'tail end of it' and so on and so forth. There was a certain sort of slightly dystopia view on us as humans in the world at that end. And at some point, the ending was not gonna be like it was in the book. But, it was less hopeful to be honest, but then I guess I'm getting old. I don't know what it is, but I really felt that we need to show the beauty of..."

"Like Hanus says in the end of the film. But, you know when Jakob says, 'I feel fear' and Hanus says 'But, you also feel hope, that is the wisdom of your kind.' I do think that is the wisdom of our kind. It is the sense of hope and the fact that we, no matter how bad things might look, we have this ability to look for grains of hope within that. And I do think that it became at least slightly a more impressionistic ending towards something that would really suggest that we don't know if they're going to get back together again. But, at least they're going to try.

Adam Sandler In Spaceman

Sandler has spent the last few laughs providing emotional drama performances alongside his trademark comedic output. In a conversation with Netflix's TUDUM, the director of Spaceman talked about shooting for a more dramatic version of Sandler with this movie. From the initial reactions, it sounds like he's absolutely got something there.

"I really wanted to have a performance from him that had nothing to do with the Adam Sandler we all know," Renck explained to TUDUM earlier this year. "I don't think people understand how [although] he may come across as funny and sweet and all that, he's very intelligent, really smart, profound.

"It's tremendously uncomfortable with all these harnesses and hanging in your own body weight," Renck continued when describing Sandler's performance. "I think it's painful in a way that's actually going to be intrusive to your performance -- unless you're Adam, because he just pushed through that in an incredible way."

What Is Spaceman About?

Netflix has a fresh synopsis for their new movie: "Six months into a solitary research mission to the edge of the solar system, an astronaut, Jakub (Adam Sandler), realizes that the marriage he left behind might not be waiting for him when he returns to Earth. Desperate to fix things with his wife, Lenka (Carey Mulligan), he is helped by a mysterious creature from the beginning of time he finds hiding in the bowels of his ship. Hanu? (voiced by Paul Dano) works with Jakub to make sense of what went wrong before it is too late. Directed by Johan Renck and based on the novel Spaceman of Bohemia, the film also stars Kunal Nayyar, Lena Olin, and Isabella Rossellini."

Dune: Part Two Director Explains Why He Kept Anya Taylor-Joy Role a Secret https://comicbook.com/movies/news/dune-part-two-anya-taylor-joy-casting-secret-explained-denis-villeneuve/ Tue, 27 Feb 2024 17:27:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh ca845747-1b85-4211-b83d-f427a95f0a82

Actor Anya Taylor-Joy's appearance on the Dune: Part Two red carpet last week confirmed that she had been cast in the project, solidifying a rumor that had been swirling for months, and as for why director Denis Villeneuve kept this detail a secret from fans for so long, Villeneuve said it was an "experiment" to see how long the secret could be kept. Given that fans know the story that is set to conclude in the sequel, and that there have been so many trailers that have been released for the film, he considers it a "gift" to surprise audiences with this casting reveal so close to the film's official release. Dune: Part Two hits theaters on March 1st.

"I think that Hollywood is the most gossipy town on earth and I wanted, as an experiment, to see how long we could keep a secret," Villeneuve confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter. "We did it. It was a special unit, we went to Africa to shoot with Anya under super-secrecy. I just loved the idea to keep something a surprise for the audience until the very end; it was like a gift I wanted to keep for the fans."

While Taylor-Joy might not earn the most screen time in the upcoming sequel, essentially serving as an uncredited cameo, the role she plays in the overall mythology of Dune will prove to be more significant in the story's future than in this specific chapter. Villeneuve has been professing his desire to develop the second Frank Herbert book, Dune Messiah, into a movie, which would involve Taylor-Joy's character more substantially, but the director shared this week that he isn't in a rush to bring that project to life.

"There is absolutely a desire to have a third one, but I don't want to rush it," Villeneuve explained to The Times of London. "The danger in Hollywood is that people get excited and only think about release dates, not quality."

Dune: Part Two lands in theaters on March 1st. Stay tuned for updates on Dune Messiah.

Josh Hartnett Teases M. Night Shyamalan's Trap as "Bizarre" and "Very Dark" https://comicbook.com/movies/news/josh-hartnett-m-night-shyamalan-trap-2024-bizarre-very-dark/ Tue, 27 Feb 2024 16:55:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 2f363e9c-4925-4ec3-9c37-1ab8e37941f4

Josh Hartnett has nothing but good words for M. Night Shyamalan and his upcoming movie Trap. The movie, in which Hartnett stars alongside Hayley Mills, Marnie McPhail, and Vanessa Smythe, is set for release in August, and according to the 40 Days and 40 Nights star, Trap isa career highlight, both because of the experience he had making it, and because of his admiration for Shyamalan. Hartnett, who appeared in Oppenheimer last year, has an unusual career path, and

Little is known about the plot to Trap so far -- which is of course not very unusual for Shyamalan projects. When it was announced, Shyamalan described Trap as a "psychological thriller set at a concert."

"It's a pivot," Hartnett told IndieWire.

Hartnett made his comments during an appearance at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, where Oppenheimer won a number of awards.

Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer is an IMAX-shot epic thriller that thrusts audiences into the pulse-pounding paradox of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world in order to save it.

The film stars Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer and Emily Blunt as his wife, biologist and botanist Katherine "Kitty" Oppenheimer. Oscar(R) winner Matt Damon portrays General Leslie Groves Jr., director of the Manhattan Project, and Robert Downey, Jr. plays Lewis Strauss, a founding commissioner of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.

Academy Award(R) nominee Florence Pugh plays psychiatrist Jean Tatlock, Benny Safdie plays theoretical physicist Edward Teller, Michael Angarano plays Robert Serber and Josh Hartnett plays pioneering American nuclear scientist Ernest Lawrence.

Oppenheimer also stars Oscar(R) winner Rami Malek and reunites Nolan with eight-time Oscar(R) nominated actor, writer and filmmaker Kenneth Branagh.

The cast includes Dane DeHaan (Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets), Dylan Arnold (Halloween franchise), David Krumholtz (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs), Alden Ehrenreich (Solo: A Star Wars Story) and Matthew Modine (The Dark Knight Rises).

The film is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin. The film is produced by Emma Thomas, Atlas Entertainment's Charles Roven and Christopher Nolan.

Reacher Star Alan Ritchson Reveals He Lost a Major Marvel Superhero Role https://comicbook.com/movies/news/alan-ritchson-superhero-roles-audition-thor-nightwing-titans-reacher/ Tue, 27 Feb 2024 16:43:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh 972df8cb-5377-4d63-afbb-afb0a1f7312f

Thanks to his compelling performance in Reacher, as well as his impressive physical stature, actor Alan Ritchson has been endorsed by fans to take on a number of iconic superhero roles, with Ritchson recently recalling how he was nearly cast as Thor for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actor even claimed that he was told the part was essentially his, though by not investing as much in his performance for an audition, the role would instead go to Chris Hemsworth, largely based on the performing aspect he brought to the opportunity. While Ritchson would go on to play Hawk in the DC series Titans, he also revealed he initially attempted to play Nightwing.

"I didn't take it seriously," Ritchson revealed to Men's Health about his Thor audition. "I was like, 'They'll throw me the part if I look like the guy; nobody really cares about acting.'" The outlet also noted, "After the audition, the casting cabal told his team the role had been his to lose but he hadn't shown that he had 'the craft.'"

Ritchson's debut performance in the world of superheroes came in Smallville, where he starred as Aquaman. Years later, he attempted to return to the world of DC as Dick Grayson for Titans, an experience he approached with more confidence than his Thor audition.

"I was so confident. I was like, 'This is the best damn audition I've ever had in my life. There's no way they can do this show without me,'" the actor admitted. Rather than losing the role due to his performance, it was reportedly due to being too old for the version of the character the show had in mind.

While Robert Pattinson is playing the Caped Crusader in The Batman II, there is an opening for someone to take on the role of The Dark Knight for James Gunn's DC Studios franchise, with no casting having yet been announced for The Brave and The Bold. Ritchson recently reflected on fan campaigns to get him to play the iconic hero.

"As huge as this rumor mill is, I feel like this part should be offered on a silver platter at this point," Ritchson joked to ComicBook.com. "I would love to play Batman. But, I'm not yet Batman. I don't know what Gunn's approach is gonna be. But, yeah, that'd be great. He's one of the most iconic characters."

Stay tuned for updates on Ritchson's possible future in the world of superheroes.

Dave Bautista Opens Up About Marvel Future After Ending Drax's Journey https://comicbook.com/movies/news/marvel-mcu-guardians-of-the-galaxy-dave-bautista-future-drax-ending/ Tue, 27 Feb 2024 16:27:00 +0000 Aaron Perine f89c3dca-ecfc-419f-88ca-8a1905f22084

Dave Bautista took a moment to elaborate on his Marvel future after the end of Drax the Destroyer's journey in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. io9 spoke to the Dune: Part Two star as he gets ready for the premiere of that massive sequel. However, a lot of people are still sad about the Guardians packing it up. Bautista clarified that he wasn't done with Marvel entirely and if the right role came across his desk, a return could be in order. However, that big MCU appearance wouldn't be as Drax. He says that door is closed. But, he's always wanted to play a complicated villain in that universe.

"No, no. When I said that I was done, I was really just done with my journey as Drax," Bautista clarified. "I still have a relationship with Marvel. I've seen Kevin Feige again, Lou [D'Esposito] as recently as two weeks ago. And they know that I would be up for a role. I love the universe--the superhero universe, I love it. I'm a fan."

"So Marvel or DC, if they call, I would answer the phone. And if the role makes sense, I'd be all over it," he added. "I just would like the opportunity to do a bigger role, a different role. Maybe a deeper role. I'd love to have the opportunity to play, like an ominous villain in the superhero universe. Yeah. But never. I'm not done with it. But my journey with Drax is over."

Bautista On Working With James Gunn And DC

(Photo: WBD/Getty)

There's been a lot of reflection for the former WWE star over the last 12 months. ComicBook.com had to ask Bautista about the possibility of working with James Gunn again. He obviously loves the Guardians of the Galaxy director and would leap at the chance at a reunion. Despite that desire, Gunn hasn't come calling yet. But, Bautista wants the filmmaker to know he's down if the opportunity presents itself.

"I couldn't give you an honest answer to that because I think..." Bautista told us. "And, I'm only gonna say this because we've had conversations, over the years, it would the WWE Hall of Fame. I was supposed to go in last year and I was on a film and I just couldn't travel. I was on a film in South Africa and logistically we just couldn't make it happen. So, you know, and I haven't talked to James about the DC Universe."

"I would love to work with James again, whether it's DC Universe or not. I just love James Gunn. He's an incredible director and we have a camaraderie that's priceless," he continued. "So to work with him again ? I mean I'd do it for free. But, we just haven't had the conversations. He's on top of DC now. He's doing his thing. I'm trying to grind along in my processing. But, I'm always open-minded too and I've expressed that to him."

How Drax Changed Bautista's Life

guardians-of-the-galaxy-drax-dave-bautista-1269344.jpg

It's clear from previous conversations about Drax that Bautista cares for that character a lot. Back in 2021, he told IGN that the Guardian changed his life. The former champion explained how his exit from WWE led to a period of uncertainty. Now, he's in a much better spot with a clear vision for his future.

"For people to really understand how much my life has changed, they would have to understand where I came from, what I went through when I was in wrestling, what I left behind to take a chance on going into acting," Bautista explained.

"And when I got the role of Drax in Guardians, I barely worked in three years. So I'd really left wrestling behind and I could have gone back with my tail between my legs, but I still [would] have been just stuck in a place that I never would have gone any further, but I just took a chance," the actor shared. "And then when I got [cast], not only because I was broke, [everything changed]. When I say broke, my house was foreclosed, I had nothing, man. I sold all my stuff. I sold everything that I made from [when] I was wrestling. I had issues with the IRS. I was just lost in everything."

Do you think we ever see Bautista in the MCU again? Let us know down in the comments!
